The latest rumors of Apple’s desire to develop its own USB-C cable are not to EU’s liking. The European Commission immediately opposed this possible project of the apple brand. It will be a one-size-fits-all charger for everyone, including Apple.
For years now, the European Union has been campaigning for the establishment of a single charging port on all smartphones, Android and iOS combined. This measure first of all has an ecological aim, since it will drastically reduce the production of electronic waste such as the chargers supplied with our smartphones.
To summarize, the idea is as follows: a single charging standard for all phones. In October 2022, the European Union gave its final approval for this ambitious measure. From 2024, all mobile phones, tablets, e-readers, cameras, portable game consoles, wireless mice and keyboards or even GPS with a power equal to or less than 100 W will be recharged via a USB port -VS.
Result, Apple will have no choice but to abandon its Lightning standard in favor of universal USB-C. And even if it has not yet been officially confirmed by the brand, there is a good chance that the iPhone 15 will be the first to ship a USB-C port.
Apple won’t develop proprietary USB-C, EU bans it
But in recent weeks, several rumors refer to an Apple project: that of developing its own proprietary USB-C certification. As you will have understood, by proceeding in this way, Apple could therefore reserve certain featuressuch as fast charging or high-speed data transfer, on its Apple-certified USB-C cables.
And for the European Commission, This is out of the question. Although these are mere rumors, the institution preferred to put the kibosh immediately. In a letter seen by the German Press Agency (dpa) in Brussels, EU Industry Commissioner Thierry Le Breton said that “such restrictions in the interaction with shippers are inadmissible”.
He adds : “Devices that do not meet the single charger requirements will not be allowed on the EU market. The Commission reminded Apple of this during a meeting in mid-March 2023″. The message has the merit of being clear. For now, Apple did not react to Thierry Le Breton’s statement or the proprietary USB-C rumors mentioned above.
