Google is preparing to unveil its first foldable smartphone, the Google Pixel Fold, at the end of the year. Before its launch, we already know a little more about its internal screen, but also about its external screen.
According to Ross Young, CEO of analyst firm Display Supply Chain Consultants and a well-known industry insider, the future Pixel Fold and the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will share a common feature: their internal screen. According to his information, both smartphones from Google and Samsung will use an internal screen of a similar size, but this will not prevent the devices from being very different.
Indeed, although their internal screen is the same, their external screen will not offer the same ratio. As previous leaks have hinted, the Google Pixel Fold will be more compact than Samsung’s famous smartphone. We would be closer to the 8.4: 9 ratio than the Find N than the rectangular 22.5: 18 ratio of the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
What are the dimensions of the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold 4 external screens?
According to Ross Young, the Pixel Fold will use a 5.8-inch external display, while the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will offer a 6.19-inch display. Since smartphones use the same internal screen, this means that the Pixel Fold will be significantly larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 4which will retain the elongated appearance of its predecessor.
The Google Pixel could therefore be more practical when it comes to viewing multimedia content or typing on the virtual keyboard of the screen. However, the smartphone could be more complicated to handle when folded due to its larger screen.
This year, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 may well offer the best grip. Indeed, the smartphone would be much thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 3 of 2021. Samsung now has a strong experience in the field and continues to improve its foldable smartphones every year, while its main competitors are trying somehow to find a place in this market with more or less successful devices. Samsung would also plan to lower the price of its foldable smartphones again, which could greatly worry its rivals.
Z Fold 4 and Google foldable will have similar sized foldable displays, but the Google cover display will be quite a bit smaller at 5.8″. This should mean it will have a wider aspect ratio than the Samsung 6.19″ Fold 4. Hear more at our conference next week.
