I stopped using WiFi repeaters in my house, these were my reasons

what makes a WIFI repeater is to connect to the router and, later, distribute the signal in the area where you locate it. There are models that allow devices to be connected wirelessly, but also via cable. It is important to always choose one with guarantees that works correctly. But whichever option you choose, it is quite common to have problems.

Why not use Wi-Fi repeaters

We do not want to say that Wi-Fi repeaters are useless, but it is true that in many cases they do not solve the problem. We do not improve the signal or even see that it works worse. This pushes us to search alternativeswhich luckily there are, to be able to take the connection to other areas of the house.

Poor signal

The reason is very clear: the signal is weak. Why is this happening? Just because of how a repeater works. You will have to connect to the router to receive a signal and, later, for other devices to connect to this device. If the router is very far away, that signal will be weak. It will not be enough to be able to have a good connection.

This means that, in many cases, having a Wi-Fi repeater at home doesn’t really provide a benefit. We are not going to notice an improvement in the wireless connection and it may even start to go wrong, if the repeater is of poor quality and cannot emit that signal well. You could have less speed than if you connect directly to the router.

When something like this happens, in many cases people believe that it is a problem with the router or even that they need to hire a higher rate. But the reality is that none of that happens. It’s as simple as that the signal does not arrive well, since the router is too far away. It can happen, for example, if you have a house with several floors.

Alternatives

So, what alternatives can we give you so that you can avoid using a Wi-Fi repeater and improve your wireless network? Something very simple is change router location. If you can do it, put it in a central place in the house. The idea is that it is as close as possible to the equipment that you are going to connect to the network. Don’t put it at one end of the house.

If you cannot move the router or that is not enough, you can always use other alternatives. Something that we highly recommend for cases in which you need the signal to reach further, is to use PLC devices. They are connected through electrical wiring, so the signal will arrive more stable. You connect one of them to the router and to the electricity, while the other you put in another socket.

You can also choose mesh systemsAlthough they tend to be more expensive. They are several devices or satellites that connect to each other. You will be able to take the connection to other places in the house and cover an area of several hundred square meters. You can distribute them in the areas where you need to have a network.

As you can see, if you have problems with Wi-Fi repeaters, you can find some alternatives. The main problem will be that the signal is weak, something that you can solve if you connect PLC or Mesh systems. Even changing the location of the router can come in handy to solve these failures.
