If you have a smart lock and the power goes out, this will happen

One of the most used options to home automation is to have an intelligent lock. It is basically an alternative to having to put the physical key and simply put a code, through biometrics or Bluetooth connections. We gain in comfort and, in part, also in security. But there is an important question that often generates doubts or concerns among users: what happens to the smart lock if power goes out?

What about a smart seamer without light

If the power goes out at home, one of the problems is that many devices stop working. For example, we cannot turn on the computer, the television, the router itself… Perhaps we will be unable to work or entertain ourselves for a while, but things will not go any further unless the cut lasts a long time. But of course, imagine that the power goes out just when you want to enter the house and you have a smart lock.

In that case the problem is not such. Even if the device stays no electrical connection, they usually have a battery that allows the locking and unlocking mechanism to continue working. Therefore, if you find yourself in this situation, you will be able to enter the code, even if you do not have electricity when you enter the house.

In addition, in many cases these smart locks also have a part for insert the physical key. Basically it means that you can enter both by putting the code or fingerprint, as well as by means of a traditional key. In that case, you simply have to open as you have done “of all life” and that’s it.

Keep in mind that an electric lock, whether it is a garage, a home or whatever, hardly consumes any energy. This means that if the power goes out you can pull the battery for a long time without problems. You will not find yourself with the problem of not being able to enter the house if the power goes out.

Lose smart features

You do have to take into account an important aspect, and that is that locks of this type are going to lose smart features. That is, for example, if they connect to the router to be able to control it from their mobile, they will lose the connection. If you access through a physical key, you will not be able to control the smart functions either.

In order to maintain smart functions if the power goes out, both in the case of electric locks and any other IoT or home automation device, you must prevent the router from turning off. For this you can use a UPS, which is an energy storage system. It’s basically like a big battery to which you can connect a computer, a router, etc. If the power goes out, they will stay connected as long as that battery lasts.

In short, if you have doors with smart locks in your home and the power goes out, you should not worry. They will continue to work without problems, since they use a battery to prevent this from happening. In addition, in many cases you will also have a physical key to be able to activate it in cases of emergency. It is always important to protect IoT devices in the home.
