The wait is over and, for a couple of hours, it is now possible to download Minecraft 1.18, as we told you a couple of weeks ago. The release is also simultaneous for the Java and Bedrock versions, so regardless of which one you use, from now on you can start exploring the news of Caves & Cliffs Update part 2. Of course, before getting into flour, I prefer anticipate that this exploration will not take you too long.
And, if you did not attend Minecraft Live in October, it is possible that you were still waiting for Minecraft 1.18 to complete everything that was announced, in October of last year, for Caves & Cliffs Update. Not so again Mojang has decided to postpone part of what was announced on that occasion, finally leaving it out of the update of the caves and mountains, which in this way become the only protagonists of this new version.
As we can read in the official blog entry announcing this release, the key to this update is found in the new generation of worlds that we have already told you about on previous occasions. As we could already see in the first beta of Minecraft 1.18, as well as in those that were published of Minecraft 1.17 before Caves & Cliffs was divided into two parts, the Y coordinate is the great beneficiary of this change.
More concretely, the base of the world happens to be in layer -64, that is, 64 heights deeper than until the previous version, where the limit was at 0. And it is in those depths that they debut in Minecraft 1.18. where in future updates (I cross my fingers that it is in 1.19) we will see the arrival of the Warden and, from his hand, also the wireless redstone and other surprises that the subsoil of our maps reserves for us.
At the opposite extreme, the highest layer to build becomes 319, compared to 256 which was the previous limit. This change in the positive part of the Y axis is due, of course, to the new, higher mountains. However, this does not mean that all the mountains will be higher from now on, mountains will continue to be generated from the same as until now, but with Minecraft 1.18 we will also have others of greater size.
For the rest, in Minecraft 1.18 we will also find a new biome, the candle … and little else. A list that, at least in the first instance, seems pretty cheap, right? It is true that many of us expected more, and this new delay has angered players, who feel disappointed, because their expectations were quite high. In part, I admit it, it is my case, I have been waiting for the Warden for more than a year and the announcement that it would not finally be in 1.18 left me a bit cold.
However, and it is not by assuming the role of devil’s advocate, it is indisputable that Mojang has done a great job to make Minecraft 1.18 and maps from previous versions of the game compatible.. The change of the positive part of the Y axis did not pose a great complexity, really. However, the changes in the subsoil are much more complex. Adding the new 64 layers of depth without breaking anything that players have done on the maps is undoubtedly a great job, and justifies in my opinion all the time that the developers have put into it.
We will have to wait, therefore, to face the Warden and be able to use the wireless redstone, with the new models that it raises. However, to open our mouths, we can already begin to explore a subsoil that has practically doubled its depth, and according to Mojang’s advances, the largest amount of diamonds is reserved at the edge of the base rock.
