Netflix paves the hack to shared accounts with the “profile transfer”

As you know, Netflix is preparing to cut one of the features that made it great and that the same company promoted, until it stopped doing it: the possibility of share the account between different users. This peculiarity, which in the end has created a school, because all those who came after it have maintained it and even encourage it today, see the example of HBO Max, its days are numbered for the great N of VOD.

The great N of VOD for now, and it will be necessary to see how it survives trying to charge 12.99 or 17.99 euros per month to see content in FullHD or 4K, respectively, when it ends with the aforementioned feature. Because there are not so many families that live under the same roof in the world and if you have to attract subscribers with a catalog in which what predominates is mediocrity, you can do it.

The point is that Netflix is going all out and, by 2023, will implement the additional charge to shared accounts, of the order of 2.99 dollars -or euros, for that matter- for each user who connects “from outside the main home” on a TV. Be careful, because initially mobile or portable devices do not count, but the limit is still set by the plan that is purchased (four devices in the premium, two in the standard, one in the basic).

Well, Netflix is already adding other functions that can come in handy by themselves, but due to the prominence it is giving them, everything seems to indicate that they point in the direction of the measure at hand: «profile transfer» has been called and can already be found in the user menu of the application, at least in the web application. You will find it just below the profiles you have created and the “manage profiles” option.

As you can see in the image, however, the feature “will not be enabled until 10 days after 10/20/22” and only “the person who owns the account will be able to enable the feature instantly by clicking the link we have sent a [dirección de correo electrónico con la que se registró la cuenta de Netflix]».

Or so it is shown in my personal case; other users already have it activated and, from what is said, there are countries in Latin America where the option was enabled a long time ago, coinciding with several of the platform’s experiments related to account sharing and that went wrong, it should be added .

The truth is that the profile transfer function is interesting beyond having been developed as a help tool for the end of shared accounts. It remains to be seen, however, how many users use it. The biggest problem with the platform is not, in fact, this measure, but rather being the most expensive in a market in which there is more and more competition, as well as plans that likewise pale in comparison to the competition, or the most important, a catalog full of niche content that does not go back.
