Opera will include ChatGPT in its sidebar

Opera users have always known that this browser has been a constant source of innovation, and that those responsible permanently focus on the user and usability. I still remember the first time I tried a tabbed browser, which of course was Opera, before the rest of its rivals added this feature that, since then, has become essential in this type of software, which in turn time has made the leap to many other classes of applications. There are more examples, but I think this one perfectly exemplifies what I mean.

So, It is surprising that it is unknown to a large majority of users. It is true that the launch of Opera GX and its multiple promotional campaigns, with many relevant YouTubers making it known to their followers, has caused a certain growth in its adoption, but even so, its market share continues to be very, very low. below what, at least in my opinion, it should have on its own merits. But then again, you’re up against tech giants, so your chances are pretty limited.

However, this does not deter those responsible for keep exploring possibilities and also, of course, observing what their competition is doing to, if they consider it necessary, try to add it to their own browser. And this is precisely the case on this occasion. As you probably remember, just a few days ago Microsoft announced the addition of OpenAI technology to both Bing and Microsoft Edge. The first was more than expected, but the second was a surprise effort and a great coup from Redmond, which must have been felt particularly strongly in the Google offices, but was also felt in the rest of the sector.

We all expected Google’s response regarding Chrome, but it turns out that Opera has gone ahead since, as we can read on its official blog, Opera has announced the inclusion of ChatGPT in the browser’s sidebar. This function is not yet available but the companies have published a video with a demo of its operation and, according to what they say, its launch will take place very soon.

In the first implementation of the OpenAI technology, ChatGPT will analyze, if we ask it, the content of the web page that we are viewing and, in response, it will offer us a summary of it. If you have thought about it, you are right, yes, that’s one of the features announced by Microsoft for Edge. However, according to the company, this is only a first step, since they would already be working on new applications of OpenAI artificial intelligence in Opera.
