Roulette For Beginners: The Best Ways To Bet

Whether you’re a new or seasoned Roulette player, stepping up to the game of chance can be daunting when there’s so many different ways you could potentially place your wager. If you opt to play online Roulette at Paddy Power, for example, or at a land-based establishment, you’ll find there are different variations of the game to choose from. The most common of these are European and American Roulette.

For a beginner, we recommend starting out with European Roulette, as this offers a lower house edge due to having just the single zero pocket, rather than both the single and double zero pockets of American Roulette.

For both games, there are a variety of different ways you could bet. These are broken up into two main sections: inside and outside bets. And with this in mind, let’s take a look at the best ways to bet, so you can potentially increase your winning chances when spinning the wheel for the first time…

Outside bets

The outside bets are the ones that can be placed on the outside area with the numbered boxes on the Roulette table layout. They are considered the most basic type of wager, and despite having lower payouts than the inside bets, they have better winning odds and involve less risk, therefore are recommended for new players.

Red/Black

Placing a red or black bet is essentially a prediction that when the wheel stops spinning and the ball stops, it will rest in one of the two colours. The odds for this bet are just under 50%, paying out 1:1, as the pockets around the wheel alternate between red and black, with just one or two green zero pockets depending on the variation of Roulette you’ve chosen to play.

High/Low

High/low bets are a similar concept to red and black bets, as you’ll receive a 1:1 payout if your prediction is correct. Here, you’ll choose whether to bet on the ‘low’ numbers (1-18) or the ‘high’ numbers (19-36) that are dispersed around the wheel.

Even/Odd

On the Roulette wheel, there are 18 even numbers and 18 odd numbers. Placing this wager will also provide you with a 1:1 payout if the outcome is what you guessed it might be – either an even number or an odd number.

Column bets

Column bets get a little more complicated. The 36 numbers on the table layout can be divided into three columns. Betting on a column will allow you to cover an entire vertical line, which consists of 12 numbers, in one go.

Remember that the single zero and double zero pockets are not associated with any columns, but if the Roulette ball lands in any of the pockets that displays a number corresponding to the one you’ve covered in your column, you’ll receive a payout of 2:1.

Dozen bets

These bets can be placed to the left of the numbered field on the table layout, where you’ll find three boxes marked 1st Dozen, 2nd Dozen and 3rd Dozen. The 1st Dozen covers numbers 1-12, the 2nd covers numbers 13-24 and the 3rd Dozen covers numbers 25-36. Placing this bet is a prediction that the outcome will be one of the 12 numbers which you’ve covered with a single chip. Winning Dozen bets can payout 2:1.

With this, you can place a bet on either one or two of the three Dozens, but if the outcome involves any of the green zero pockets, it will be classed as a loss.
