Stack Over Flow has presented the annual survey that it does among the developer community, to which on this occasion almost 90,000 developers from all over the world have answered. In it, in addition to confirming that developers are increasingly using AI-based support tools, it is clear that JavaScript is still the most widely used programming language. It has been for 11 consecutive years.
JavaScript is also the language most developers want to use, closely followed by Python. But the language most admired by developers has turned out to be this time Rust. Nearly 85% of developers who have used Rust say they want to continue using it in the future. In the case of JavaScript and Python this only happens in 58% and 66% of the cases, respectively. On the list of most admired languages, Rust is followed by TypeScript and an alternative to C called Zig.
In terms of usage, JavaScript is followed by HTML and CSS, and Python. This time, Python has overtaken SQL, which is in fourth position. TypeScript ranks fifth. PostgreSQL has overtaken MySQL in database usage, and AWS remains the most widely used cloud platform, well ahead of Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, which rank second and third.
The two most frequently used web technologies are Node.js and React, while the most admired web technology and framework turned out to be Phoenix, judging by the number of developers who would choose to work with it again.
The highest-paid tech is Zig, with a median annual salary of $103,611. As for the rest of the tools, Docker is the most used, and the IDE of choice for developers is still Microsoft Visual Studio Code, used by 74% of those who have answered the survey. It is followed by Microsoft Visual Studio and JetBrains’ IntelliJ IDEA. The most popular asynchronous tools are Jira and Confluent, and Windows is the most widely used operating system, followed by MacOS and Ubuntu Linux.
