So you can choose a document type in Pages

Apple’s word processor offers many possibilities when it comes to creating documents of all kinds and with the features you want. You can also use the templates that are already created to make your documents much faster and easier. If you want to know how it works, in this post we will explain how to choose a type of document in Pages.

Pages is Apple’s word processor, and with it you can create documents in the format you want. You can decide the type of document you want to create, depending on the content. For example, in a word processing document, the text goes from page to page, which is ideal for a college paper or a letter. However, a page layout document is like a blank canvas, and you can organize text boxes and graphics. In addition, Pages has templates already created to make it easier for you to start creating your document.

Choose the type of document you want

If you want to create a basic document from your Mac, in Pages, choose File and click New. To create a basic word processing document, double-click one of the blank templates in the Basic category in the template picker. If you want to create a basic page layout document, double-click one of the blank templates in the Basic category, then choose File and click Convert to Page Layout. Other categories such as Newsletters and Books have templates that use the Page Layout document type.

You can also use Pages from other devices, so if you’re using an iPad or iPhone, you can create a basic word processing or page layout document by choosing the right template. You can also change fonts after you’ve started working on a document. To create a new document, follow these steps:

  1. Open Pages, and in the document manager, tap the New Document button at the top of the screen to open the template chooser. If a document is open, tap Documents or the back button in the top left corner to go to the document manager.
  2. To create a basic word processing document, tap Start Typing. Or tap “Select a template” and one of the blank templates from the Basic category.
  3. Here’s how to create a basic page layout document:
    • With a basic word processing document open, tap the More button
    • Click “Document Settings”. If you see an alert about screen display, tap OK to turn off Screen Display.
    • In the Document tab, turn off “Document Body” and hit Convert.

If you’re not sure what type of document you’re using, tap a corner of the document to avoid selecting text or objects, the More button, Document Settings, then Document. If “Document Body” is activated, it is a word processing document. If “Document Body” is off, it is a page layout document.
