Last year, shortly before the annual keynote, a rumor came out that the iPhone 13s were capable of making calls and sending messages through a satellite connection. This functionality, in the boxes of Apple for several years, could make it possible tosend emergency messages when there is no cellular connection. Finally, the satellite connection was not announced on the iPhone 13.

According to information gleaned by Mark Gurman, journalist at Bloomberg, Apple could finally inaugurate this major novelty on the iPhone 14 range. “The company was initially aiming to add the feature within last year’s models, but it looks like it’s pretty much ready for this year”announces Mark Gurman, whose information is generally verified.

A satellite connection for Apple Watch from 2023

As announced last year, this functionality will be limited to emergency messages. Baptized “Emergency Message via Satellite”, this system would be directly integrated with the Messages app as a 3rd communication protocolin addition to traditional SMS and messages sent via the Internet.

Apple wouldn’t reserve this feature for iPhones. From 2023, the brand should add satellite connection to Apple Watch. “The technology would provide an alternative to the Garmin inReach Explorer and SPOT, handheld satellite communicators with similar functionality”, says Mark Gurman. We can therefore expect to see this feature arrive on the Apple Watch Series 9.

The Bloomberg Reporter Emeritus points out that Globalstar, one of many Apple partners, has reached an agreement to buy 17 new satellites. This investment should enable Globalstar to power “continuous satellite services” for a customer “potential”. This client has paid hundreds of millions of dollars to the firm. For Gurman, it is quite possible that it is Apple. Under these conditions, the informant estimates that the satellite functionality will soon be functional.
