The Outside Bets Within A Game Of Roulette

Roulette: a casino classic, that has truly stood the test of time. Throughout its history, players all over the world have been mesmerised by the wheel’s charm and the idea of trying to predict the future; where the small white ball will land within the pocketed compartments of the Roulette wheel.

With an ever-growing fan base, players have been seeking new ways of playing the game, from online Roulette at Paddy Power and other casino websites to the most famous casinos around the world, such as Monte Carlo and Las Vegas.

With new players joining the Roulette table for the first time, we thought it might be a good idea to explain the easier types of bets to place within a game of Roulette, otherwise known as outside bets, to help you gain confidence at the table before placing down a more complicated bet.

Outside Bets

Red/Black

One of the simpler bets to place within a game of Roulette, as you are simply betting on whether the ball will land on a red or black number. This is also known as even-money with the betting odds of 1:1. However, the chances of you winning are slightly less than 50%, as depending on if you are playing European or American Roulette, there will either be one green zero pocket within the Roulette wheel, or two green pockets (0 and 00). If the ball was to land in the green zone, you would qualify your bet as a loss.

Odd/Even

These bets are just like the red/black bet concept, with the only difference being that you are betting whether the next number is either odd or even. Again, the odds are 1:1 with a chance of winning just under 50% due to the zeros within your wheel at play.

High/Low

For this bet type, you are betting on whether the ball will land on a lower category number between 1 and 18 or a higher category number between 19 and 36. Again, this is an even-money bet with the odds of 1:1 and the chances of winning are slightly less than 50% due to the zeros at play.

Columns

This bet type consists of one of three designated columns found within the Roulette table layout. Each column contains 12 numbers and betting a column increases your betting odds to 2:1.

Column one contains numbers; 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34.

Column two contains numbers; 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 23, 35.

Column three contains numbers; 3, 6, 9 ,12, 15, 18 ,21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36.

Dozens

A dozen bet is like a column bet, with the difference being that the set of 12 numbers are in numerical order. Betting odds are the same as columns at 2:1.

Dozen one contains numbers 1 – 12.

Dozen two contains numbers 13 – 24.

Dozen 3 contains numbers 25 – 36.

— Once you feel you have mastered the outside bets, and you feel comfortable doing so, it may be time to look into inside bets; how to place them, and what they entail.
