this “risky” trick allows you to bypass the ban on account sharing

A few days ago, Netflix officially introduced a ban on account sharing in France. In order for your loved ones to continue to benefit from your account, you will have to pay supplements. Unless you opt for this slightly risky solution.

As you may know, since May 24, 2023, Netflix has put an end to account sharing in France. Now, a Netflix account can only be used by one household, according to the blog post published by the platform.

To ensure that your family members and/or close friends continue to enjoy the Netflix catalog, you will have to pay supplements, up to €5.99 per user.

In the past few days, you and your friends have probably received at least one of these notifications asking you to verify your device via a one-time code. The problem is that this code is sent to the account owner’s email address… Icing on the cake, it remains valid for 15 minutesno more.

In other words, the situation can quickly turn into a nightmare for the owner of the account, who will find himself inundated with one-time codes (and cornered by relatives insisting on obtaining the precious verification).

Share your email address password

However, rather than canceling your subscription or paying for additional access, our colleagues at BGR have another solution for you. Be careful though, it presents some risks. The idea is simple: share your email address password.

At first glance, that sounds like a very bad idea, we grant you that. However, by doing so, people who have access to your account will be able to check their devices immediately without bothering you and without worrying about missing the 15 minute window.

But as said above, sharing the password of your email address poses risks to your security and privacy. To avoid this, the easiest way is to create a new email address dedicated exclusively to your Netflix account.

Create an email address specifically for Netflix

As the Netflix account holder, you must first create a new email address. It’s up to you to choose the provider of your choice (Gmail remains the most relevant option, due to the excellent privacy and security features of Google’s email service).

Then, it will be necessary to define a strong and different password to reinforce the security of this new address. This done, share it with users. Note that it will probably take configure this Gmail address on the family’s Android and iOS smartphones.

Now go to Netflix to replace your old email address with the new one created for the occasion. Here are the steps to follow :

  • Log in to your Netflix account at a computer
  • Click on your main profile
  • Then drag the cursor to the tab Account
  • Now click on Change email address
  • Netflix will send you a one-time security code to verify your identity
  • Enter the six character code in the next screen
  • Enter your old email address and the new one in the corresponding windows
  • Press on To safeguard to validate the process

So, your Netflix account is now linked to your new special “Netflix” email address. You are free to share the password of the Gmail and Netflix accounts to the users of your choice.

A far from foolproof workaround

As BGR points out, this method only works with a group of people you trust. Via this trick, the owner of the account will no longer have to transmit verification codes to his family and friends each time he logs in. But beware, this workaround is not foolproof and does not get rid of the monitoring of the platform.

In the future, it’s a safe bet that Netflix will strengthen the controls of the various devices who have access to your account. Sooner or later, the platform will notice that too many devices connect to your profile.
