TikTok integrates a new “borderline” content detection system

At the start of 2023, TikTok wanted to take stock of its various systems used to filter sexual content, whether explicit, suggestive or “borderline”. The social network notably announces the integration of a new model capable of automatically identifying this type of content.

While the fate of TikTok in the United States is most uncertain, the social network wanted to start this year 2023 by taking stock of its policy concerning nudity, sexually explicit content or “borderline” content and suggestive.

In 2022, the company honed its machine learning models to improve their consistency and accuracy in detecting sexually explicit, suggestive, and “borderline” content, or borderline if you prefer in the language of Molière.

The goal is to identify videos that do not necessarily violate the social network’s community guidelines, but which may be offensive or inappropriate for younger audiences. However, TikTok has therefore just announced the launch of its next iteration of its content detection model.

Thanks to the progress made, TikTok hopes to be able to offer a more appropriate and comfortable experience for teenage account holders. The company also specifies that it has “blocked teenage accounts from viewing over a million overtly sexually suggestive videos” during the last 30 days.

In this same press release, TikTok announces that it has signed a partnership with StopNCII.org, a free online tool designed to support victims of abuse of intimate images shared on the net without their consent. This collaboration will not only provide better support to victims, but also to automatically prevent the publication on our platform of content identified under this agreement.

Let’s conclude with a section dedicated to creators. TikTok says it has audience controls in place to allow creators to limit access to their content to accounts over 18 on LIVE in 2022. However, this functionality will be deployed worldwide in the coming weeks. “Our goal has always been to ensure that our community, especially the teens on our platform, have a safe, positive, and joyful experience when they come to TikTok,” ensures the application.
