Tizen OS and WebOS are coming to TVs from other manufacturers

Samsung announces that it has opened to bring Tizen OS, the operating system mainly used in many of its smart TVs, to models from other manufacturers. This is going to slipstream of what he did LG last week, when it announced that WebOS would be coming to TVs made by third parties.

Samsung will license Tizen OS for use on smart TVs from other companies. Initially it has partnered with Akai, RCA and other companies such as Bauhn, Linsar, Sunny and Vispera who sell in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Third-party manufacturers that will implement Tizen OS will not only use the operating system, but will also have access to services such as Samsung TV Plus, which supplies video and television content via streaming. That’s in addition to Universal Guide for personalized recommendations and the Bixby voice digital assistant.

The moves made by Samsung and LG could be an attempt to better compete against Android TV, Roku and Amazon Fire TV, as the market for commercial operating systems has, for a long time, gone far beyond pre-installed software. in the devices, since in the end what gives them value is the ecosystem of services and applications around them.

Both Tizen and WebOS offer interesting options in terms of customization by letting you choose between several options at the level of voice assistants and having support for Apple Airplay, although not for Google’s Chromecast. On the other hand, the search giant still has to deal with the internal competition generated by Google TV and Android TV, since most televisions and specific models such as the NVIDIA Shield TV still use the second. Of course, Google is not going to sit idly by and is already pulling strings so that all third-party devices work with Google TV.

That there is more competition in the sector is good for consumers, especially when it comes to one that tends towards monopolies and duopolies such as operating systems. However, possibly more than one would prefer to have less “intelligent” devices than those that are yet to come or are already in their homes.
