Valve is drastically changing its rules for presenting games on Steam

Valve has updated its rules regarding the presentation of games on its Steam online store. From now on, it will no longer be authorized to display a visual that highlights notes or even rewards obtained. A way to clarify the store and avoid abuse.

When browsing the Steam store, it is common to come across visuals of games that boast about their merits in their visuals. Often, we have the notes of specialized sites included next to the title or mentions of awards obtained here and there. From 1er september, this kind of practice will no longer be allowed.

Valve has indeed updated its policy. To present a game, it will now require a clean visual, with only the title of the game in question. Subtitles and the mention of new content will be authorized, but no more.

This new policy could penalize small developers which precisely highlight the good notes in order to stand out. Valve specifies that this data will not disappear from the platform, since it will be displayed on the game page.

On its official website, Valve writes:

“We have noticed that for some time now the graphic assets offered by the development teams have included more text, logos of awarded prizes, and even evaluation scores. (…) For example, some game logos have become so small that it becomes difficult to know what game it is. In other cases, images of graphic assets are covered with award-winning logos and ratings that interfere with reading to the point of making it difficult. »

Then add the language argument, which is completely legitimate:

“We also find that in most cases these texts added to the images are in English, which excludes a large part of the Steam customer base who does not speak this language. »

In all cases, this is a change that should not penalize the user too much, but which should change the lives of some developers relying on the quality of their title to seduce. We will have to find other ways to stand out in a Steam that is full of nuggets.
