Volkswagen isn’t good enough on software integration, executives will make big changes

On December 15, there will be a big meeting of the pundits of Volkswagen. Among the issues on the agenda, that of the software integration of the brand’s vehicles will be of great importance.

Volkswagen ID.Buzz

If Volkswagen’s know-how in terms of mechanics is recognized, the same is not true when it comes to the software integration of the solid German cars. The testimonies reporting more or less serious malfunctions affecting them are recurrent. That’s a big deal for a group that wants to become the new king of electric vehicles within the next two years.

Volkswagen will market 10 new electric cars by 2026. While there is no doubt that the brand will be able to offer a driving experience that is up to par, it is less certain that the software part of its vehicles will bring satisfaction. We had, for example, found in our test of the ID.Buzz that the ergonomics of the infotainment system left much to be desired. In an interview with The Verge, a motorist shared his setbacks with his ID.4.

Volkswagen is behind on the IT aspect, even compared to traditional brands

Regarding its ID.4, Me Flash says: “As a car, not to mention the infotainment and software, it’s fantastic. Few automobiles are as good, really. But Volkswagen is a bit behind on the software, even compared to other historical brands”. Everything concerning the infotainment, the integration of the smartphone or even the touch controls was a real disappointment. Everything seemed complicated: programming the battery charging, using CarPlay without having to repeat it. So many acts that seem simple to others are irritating with the Volkswagen.

Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume acknowledges this: its teams are behind in terms of software integration. This is a new skill to acquire, at a time when we are talking about the end of the heat engine and the advent of autonomous cars. In other words, the company must convert to IT. That’s what brands like Tesla, Rivian and even Renault, with the auto industry’s first Metaverse, have already figured out. In the words of a Volkswagen representative, “the group is going through the biggest transformation in its history. Software will become the real differentiators”.
