What will security in the Cloud be like in 2022? Discover it here

We live in an increasingly digital world in which the cloud is increasingly important both personally and at work. On an individual level, it is becoming more and more common for us to have our photos and other confidential files stored in the cloud. On the other hand, the cloud offers great flexibility to the workers of a company and makes it easier for them to work remotely. In the last 15 years we have seen how the cloud has innovated by offering new technologies and options. Both individuals and companies must be prepared to work in the cloud safely. In this article we are going to talk about the trends in the cloud regarding security that we will see in 2022.

Cloud security trends

In the 2021 Cloud Security Status Report for Ermetic carried out to 200 IT security managers, it was revealed that the 98% suffered a data breach in the cloud in the last 18 months. Regarding other trends in the cloud on security, it has been seen that:

  • 63% of respondents had sensitive data exposed in the cloud.
  • 83% of companies reported that at least one of their gaps in the cloud had to do with access.
  • 92% of companies will attempt to implement least privilege in the cloud in 2022.

Technology is increased without local servers

Companies are increasingly deciding on a serverless architecture on their platforms. This means that in addition to use FaaS services (Function as a Service) of cloud service providers must also understand the potential risks that may arise.

Also in that aspect we see options such as non-distribution architectures that are used to have more control over FaaS architectures in multiple cloud service providers. Thus, with greater control of these types of decisions, a new way of thinking about security appears. This is going to be one of the trends in the cloud that we will see in 2022.

Multi-cloud strategy, an upward trend

Previously, you were opting for a public, private or hybrid cloud. However, in 2022 we will see how multi-cloud strategies come to take hold, and we will see how many companies will choose the technologies that best suit their platforms.

Later we will see how the adoption of this model matures along with some multi-cloud security tools. Also, we will see multi-cloud surround edge computing, which will continue to spread to factories, branch offices and private data centers. In short, another of the trends in the cloud for 2022 will be the multi-cloud rise where the services of different cloud service providers will be combined.

Safety and what to look for

2021 has seen a large increase in violations using SaaS platforms. That’s why we’ve seen a significant increase in SaaS security offerings and tools in response. One of those areas is tools SaaS Security Posture Management (SSPM). Thanks to the SSPM we can see how security is guaranteed and activity is maintained. In 2021, it could already be observed that these SSPMs were adopted by a dozen platforms. The forecast for 2022 is that we will see a notable increase in the number of SaaS platforms that will be compatible with these security tools. We will also begin to see Dynamic access policies with attribute-based access control (ABAC). ABAC works by taking advantage of tags to dynamically determine access permissions. So, if for example if I have a “project” tag, I can construct a policy that grants permissions if the value of the tag «project »in the main matches the value of the same tag «project »in the target resource or environment. This can allow for more scalable and reusable policies. They can also simplify administration and improve segregation of permissions. However, it should be noted that many cloud service providers have not yet implemented this new strategy, and it is expected that throughout this year it will become more and more common.

In summary, the cloud trends for 2022 will be the rise of serverless technology, multi-cloud, SSPM and the gradual introduction of ABAC.
