when is it best to use each

The plastic optical fiber a hole is being made in our homes if we want to wire the house, this type of technology allows us to pass the wiring through the same conduits as the electrical wiring, without having any type of interference, crosstalk or other problems that network cables do have Ethernet. However, there are cases in which it is worth using Ethernet network cables, and in other cases using plastic fiber optics. Today at RedesZone we are going to explain in what cases you should use each of them to have the best possible performance.

Scenarios where using plastic optical fiber is best

There are scenarios where using plastic optical fiber is the best option to guarantee good wired performance, in these cases, we will be able to achieve real 1Gbps speeds without any problem, in addition, the connection latency will be very low, ideal for playing online . Next, you can see the cases in which using plastic optical fiber is the best option:

  • If you live in a house where no Ethernet network jacks are already installed, then there will be no conduit available to run the Ethernet network cable, and you will need to use electrical wiring conduits. In this scenario, it is recommended to use POF fiber, because it is immune to possible interference with electrical cables.
  • If you live in a house with free and empty canals, but they are too finethen using plastic optical fiber is the best option, and also because POF fiber cables are really thin, much thinner than Ethernet network cable.

In these two scenarios, using POF fiber is the best option, over Ethernet network cable. In addition, connecting these fiber cables is much easier than crimping an Ethernet network cable, which is why it is a point in favor of buying self-installing equipment. However, you should keep in mind that POF fiber packs come with 1Gbps devices, while Ethernet network cables allow us to obtain 10Gbps speeds without many problems.

Consider the Ethernet cable in these cases

In the event that you want to wire your house with Ethernet network cable, which is much cheaper than plastic fiber optic packs and will have a higher speed, you should take into account the following:

  • if you have one house where there are already Ethernet network socketsbut you want to put even more outlets, you could use these same conduits to run more Ethernet network cables, if possible, Cat 7 type S/FTP to reduce possible interference.
  • If you don’t have network sockets, but you have one relatively short distance, you could run Ethernet network cables through the electrical wiring, although this is not highly recommended due to interference. If you are going to try this option, always use Cat 7 type S/FTP cables that are much more protected against external interference than typical Cat 5e or Cat 6. Remember that network cables are thicker than electrical wiring, it is You may not physically have the possibility to insert the cable, and less the Cat 7 that are thicker than the usual Cat 6.

In our case, the house is after 2011, it already had all the rooms wired, however, we wanted to add additional Cat 7 cabling to have a 10G Multigigabit network in our home. What we did was to put a total of 3 network cables through the same conduit, although it was quite complicated because Cat 7 cables are more rigid than Cat 6 cables, and somewhat thicker.
