Why using double VPN or Multihop is not such a good idea

Double VPN or Multihop can be a problem

Double VPNs, also known as multihop, is often interpreted as more secure. Basically it is about sending Internet traffic through two servers instead of just one. There are different providers that offer this possibility. At least on paper, it is an extra layer of security as it can be said to be a tunnel within a tunnel.

Its operation is simple: when trying to visit a web page, the traffic is sent to a VPN server and encrypted. Subsequently, that server sends it, already encrypted, to a second server. We are before a double encryption which will allow the IP address to travel in a hidden way, with one more layer of encryption.

Therefore, at first we can say that everything is advantages. We are going to browse more securely and make it more difficult for a hacker to attack and get to the data we are sending. But this is going to have problems that will directly affect the operation. Is it really worth using a double VPN or Multihop?

speed problems

The first clear disadvantage, the first problem of using a double VPN, is the internet speed. It is a fact that when browsing through these types of applications the speed always decreases. This will be more or less pressed depending on the server to which we connect and the program itself.

Now think about using two VPNs instead of one. No doubt the speed is going to be even more limited. Bearing in mind that what it provides for security is not really going to be significant for home users in general, is it worth losing even more speed and having problems with cuts?

Uses of a VPN to avoid problems

Affects device performance

You also have to take into account how it will affect the performance of the device itself. Each program that we install will affect it so that it works faster, more stable and with fewer problems. If we use a double VPN, the team will have to encrypt and decrypt the data twice, with the consumption of resources that this entails.

The same on a powerful computer, the difference is not so noticeable, but you may notice it if you use a more limited device. Therefore, it is another of the disadvantages of using this type of application.

Cost

The Economic cost it’s going to be older Not all VPNs offer this double encryption, so if we want to opt for it, we are going to have to pay for a superior service, which is going to be more expensive. Especially if we want to avoid a malfunction as much as possible, we will have to opt for a larger one.

However, although there are both free and paid VPNs, our advice is to avoid the former because they can be problematic. We may have operational problems and also in order to protect security. It is important to always be aware of the myths when using VPN.
