Windows 11 will now force all users to have a Microsoft account

Windows 11 will soon force all users to have a Microsoft account to install. This was already the case for the Home version, but not for the Pro version. This obligation should arrive with the big update of October.

Windows 11 2022

Microsoft really wants you to have an account for Windows 11. Very soon, it will be impossible to install the OS using your local account. This concerns the Pro version, since the Home version already imposes this restriction.

According to Windows Latest, version 22H2 of Windows 11 will impose this process. Without an Internet connection, the operating system simply cannot be installed on your machine.

Windows 11 wants to link each user to their account

On the Home version, Windows 11 already requires the use of a Microsoft account. When the user installs the OS for the first time, he must be connected to the Internet to enter his email address. Unable to use a local account, as was the case for Windows 10.

This brings advantages, such as OneDrive (very practical when using several terminals) or an automatic connection to Microsoft software, namely the Xbox application or Outlook. Nevertheless, not everyone wants to have an online account to use Windows 11. Users have always managed to find tricks to have a local account, such as not having Internet during installation or even deleting their Microsoft account after launching the OS for the first time. However, Microsoft takes great care in removing these alternatives.

In the near future, it will therefore be necessary to have a Microsoft account to use the Microsoft tool. This may surprise some users, but it actually makes sense. Google, Apple… all big tech companies now require an online ID. A way to make life more practical for the user, but also to make it easier to use data and strengthen security.

At this time, the need for a Microsoft account only seems to apply to new installations. What about Windows 11 Pro that use a local account today? Will these have to become an online account? We will have to wait to find out. As a reminder, this big 22H2 update should land during the month of October on all versions of the OS.
