Windows 8.1 runs out of extended support

The extended support of Windows 7 came to an end on January 10, and the same has happened with Windows 8.1, an operating system that already does not receive any kind of support from Microsoft, not even security updates and bug fixes.

As we have already told you on previous occasions, this does not mean that said operating system will stop working overnight, nor that it will become an insecure operating system or give serious stability errors, but Yes, it is true that, over time, Windows 8.1 will end up giving problems, and therefore it is “a time bomb”.

Ideally, if we use Windows 8.1, it is to update to a more current operating system. We do not have to worry about the cost, since we can use the activation license of said operating system to upgrade to windows 10 free, and from this we can later make the leap to Windows 11, and yes, also for free.

Windows 8.1 was released in 2017, and it hit the market as a major update to Windows 8, an operating system that was widely criticized and did not have the expected success. That update brought important news, such as the return of the start button, interface level adjustments and 3D printing support.

According to the latest market data, until December 2022 about 2.59% of PCs used globally have Windows 8.1 installed, a very small percentage in comparative terms, but considerable in raw numbers (number of total users). Considering how unsuccessful that operating system was, I think it’s likely that many of the users who still use it are those who bought it pre-installed on an OEM machine.
