The vast majority of NAS on the market use hard drives as storage units, allowing them to store a large amount of data at a very low cost per GB. Some include solid state drives, but acting as a cache to speed up access to frequently used files and increase overall performance.
QNAP’s new NASbook TBS-464 is a unique device as use solid state drives for data storage, which gives you great possibilities.
SSDs not only take up less space than hard drives, but they are also faster, quieter, and generate less heat. The result is a Extremely compact NAS (23 x 16 x 3 cm) that can be placed anywhere. The less positive part is that robust storage solutions are more expensive than hard drives in cost per Gbyte.
The NASbook TBS-464 has four M.2 2280 slots to install PCIe Gen3 NVMe solid state drives. The NAS is powered by a quad-core Intel Celeron N5105 or N5095 processor based on Intel’s new Jasper Lake architecture. It is accompanied by 8 Gbytes of DDR4 RAM and 4 GB of additional internal storage to install the operating system, the QTS 5.0 that QNAP released last month.
Other notable connectivity features are the two dual 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, three USB 3.0 ports, two HDMI ports (with support for displays with 4K @ 60Hz resolutions) and an infrared sensor.
QNAP says that the system consumes approximately 28 watts of total power during typical operation with all four SSD slots occupied and approximately 18 watts in sleep mode. There is a fan for active cooling, but at a sound level of 25 db the system should be quite quiet.
Weighing below 800 grams, the NASbook TBS-464 is one of the most compact options we’ve seen to date for these storage and networking solutions. QNAP has not provided a sales price.
