Acer Aspire 3 with APU Ryzen ‘Mendocino’, a laptop for all audiences

Acer has announced the launch of a new Aspire 3 series laptop, which stands out for the Ryzen Mendocino APUs that it uses as its hardware base.

Introduced last spring, the ‘Mendocino’ series are APUs intended for motorize high consumption laptops (or mini-PCs). They include CPU, GPU and memory controller in the same package and are manufactured by TSMC on a modern 6nm process node. Let’s remember that AMD chose to use the ZEN2 architecture and not the new ZEN3 for reasons of cost and consumption. This (if the user knows what he is buying) does not have to be negative since the sale price is consistent and, as you will see, the equipment with these chips is very cheap.

In addition, AMD has enhanced the graphic section with a integrated with RDNA2 architecture. These laptop SoCs are powered by LPDDR5 memory (in two or four channels). The rest of its I/O features, connectivity, and power optimization are the same as those used by the Ryzen 6000 series. Speaking of power, AMD promises that these devices will offer up to 10 hours of battery life.

It is a laptop (model A315-24P-R75B) with a 15.6-inch screen and FHD resolution. It includes a minimum of 8 Gbytes of RAM and a 128 GB SSD of storage capacity.

AMD offers two chip options, Ryzen 3 7320U or Ryzen 5 7520U. Both are low-power APUs (15W), with a 4-core processor and 8 native processing threads, 6 Mbytes of cache, and integrated graphics. AMD Radeon 610M. The difference between them comes from the working frequency, in the Ryzen 5 up to 4.3 GHz.

It supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth, has stereo speakers, headphone output and webcam, and has HDMI ports, 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (10 Gbps with support for video output and 45 W charging) and 2 USB 3.2 Gen 1 type A ports. Its weight is 1.8kg and its autonomy increases to 10 hours.

A basic team, but with enough competition for the mid-range, with Windows 11 Home pre-installed and with a price of $399 really attractive. More models of this type will arrive with the Mendocino and also Chromebook because AMD already announced that it would natively support Chrome OS.
