Investing in LEGO sets is more profitable than gold and works of art

The economists of the Higher School of Economics in Russia they discovered what all fans of colored bricks have known perhaps for some time, namely that the market prices of retired LEGO sets are always growing and, every year, more and more profitable.

According to the study, in the secondary market, discontinued sets are growing at least 11% per year, a figure that is higher than the average returns provided by gold, large stocks, bonds and many other investment alternatives.

The study authors analyzed the prices of 2,322 Lego sets (strictly unopened) from 1987 to 2015, based on retail prices and the thousands of transactions that take place on online auctions every day.

The study will be published in the January issue of Research, in the section of International Business and Finance.

“We are used to thinking that people buy items such as jewelry, antiques or works of art as an investment”, he has declared Victoria Dobrynskaya, professor of economics and finance at HSE and co-author of the study, in a university journal article. “However, there are other options, such as collectible toys. Tens of thousands of deals are entered into on the LEGO secondary market. Even taking into account the low prices of most sets, this is a huge market that is not well known by traditional investors ”.

The researchers also offer some compelling reasons as to why people are willing to pay so much money for discontinued LEGO sets. One of these could be the small number of sets produced and the limited number of people who want to sell their LEGOs after buying them. Additionally, LEGO has been making colorful bricks since the 1960s, and has amassed a multitude of adult and nostalgic fans over the years who appreciate older sets.

And you, do you already have some precious sets that you keep sealed at home as a long-term investment?
