Acer tackles urban mobility and launches two electric scooters

Acer is known for building computers and computer accessories. However, it is on the electric scooter market that we find the Taiwanese manufacturer. It introduces two models: the Acer ES Series 3 and Acer ES Series 5 scooters. The first is intended to be affordable and targets a young clientele, the second asserts itself as more enduring and is aimed at young professionals. Both easily reach the speed limit of 25 km/h, since they are restrained. Without it, the 5 Series could theoretically drive at 40 km/h.

At a time when everyone is looking for a way to get around more advantageous than the thermal car, Acer is riding the wave of what is called soft urban mobility. For both ecological and health reasons, people are increasingly adopting so-called alternative means of transport. According to Statista, annual sales of electric scooters have been multiplied by nine in five years. At a time when self-service scooter operators may be on borrowed time in major cities across France, scooter makers have a good opportunity to make a comeback.

Apart from their dimensions, nothing visually distinguishes these two scooters: they have the characteristic brand colors, namely a very sober matte black dress underlined by a phosphorescent green border around the wheels and on the handlebar stem. By Acer’s own admission, the ES Series 3 and ES Series 5 scooters are aimed at a young audience who make daily trips from home to work with sometimes portions on public transport. However, the two models differ in their uses..

The Acer ES 5 series is aimed at city dwellers looking for comfort and autonomy

The Acer ES Series 5 is aimed at young adults, ready to travel greater distances to get to work: its 15Ah lithium-ion battery fully charges in eight hours and offers a range of 65 kilometers. Its 36 V motor for 470W of maximum power allows it to easily climb slopes of 16% and its IPX 4 certification allows it to swallow the kilometers without fear of bad weather. This vehicle is designed to be comfortable and easy to drive: it has cruise control and three speed modes (0 to 6 km/h, 0 to 10 km/h or 0 to 25 km/h). Almost no equipment is missing: LCD control screen, puncture-proof tires, ergonomic handles, rear shock absorber, front electronic brake, rear disc brake for emergency braking, one-hand folding or even a wide platform. This great comfort and this rich equipment is however paid in terms of weight and size. Despite its aluminum frame, the Acer ES 5 Series measures 118 x 49 x 125 cm when unfolded and weighs 18.5 kg, even heavier than the very good Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter 4 Pro tested in our columns.

In terms of safety, the 10-inch solid tires of the ES Series 5 are a guarantee against unpleasant surprises: any puncture is simply impossible. Front and rear headlights, brake lights and side reflectors allow the rider to see and be seen.

The Acer ES Series 3 scooter: it goes less far but it costs less

With the Series 3 model, Acer is targeting those for whom lightness and speed, both in travel and in recharging, is essential. This is reflected in its measurements and in its weight (107 X 49 X 120 cm once unfolded for 16 kg). Its wheels have a diameter of 8.5 inches while its motor develops a maximum power of 250 W. Its chassis is also made of aluminum and can support a weight up to 120 kg.

It has a front 36V/250W motor allowing it to reach the maximum authorized speed of 25 km/h and is equipped with 8.5-inch (21.59 cm) wheels. If the list of equipment of the Acer ES Series 3 scooter is almost identical to that of its big sister, it is at the level of its motorization that users will feel a real difference. The 7.8Ah lithium-ion battery recharges in 4 hours, which also results in a lower autonomy. Acer announces that the Series 3 allows you to browse up to 20km.

The Acer Series 3 and Series 5 scooters will be available in France from the end of October in preview at Fnac Darty for €399 and €499 respectively.
