Apple will withdraw access to its services to old devices

Tech companies, and Apple is no exception, try to determine the length of the life of the devices they produce. This can be for a number of reasons, most likely to a combination of several of them. Thus, if we listen to his speeches about it, words like reliability, performance and safety are always part of the explanations, although others such as revenue, sales and profitability They should also feature, in the opinion of many.

A point of view that, in reality, makes perfect sense, since planned obsolescence has been and is the order of the day, to the point that even official institutions have had to take action on the matter, establishing legal regulations that oblige to manufacturers to provide users with the necessary means to update and repair their devices within reasonable timeframes, which translates into both economic savings and less waste generation. Something against which, paradoxically, these companies claim to fight.

Updating operating systems is a key element in this regard. It is true that a device can continue to work with an old operating system, but the main problem is that they no longer receive technical support, which means that if new problems are detected in them, they will no longer be corrected. And surely you have thought about it and you are right, this also extends to the field of security. In other words: using an operating system without support, as the same manufacturers remember, is a major security problem.

Apple will withdraw access to its services to old devices

Just yesterday we were talking about the Apple devices that will be unable to update to iOS 17, and today we know why a tweet from reliable filter-taker Stella – Fudge, who other older devices will soon be unable to access Apple services. More specifically, the cut will come to all users who are still using the following versions of Apple’s operating systems:

  • iOS 11-11.2.6
  • macOS 10.13-10.13.3
  • watchOS 4-4.2.3
  • tvOS 11-11.2.6

And what services will they no longer be able to access? We actually get done much faster if we list what they will still be able to access, as it will only be to iCloud, since it is the service used so that users can manage their backups in the cloud. The rest, from the App Store to Apple Music will stop working on them.

A first reading may indicate that we are talking about very old operating systems, and that this measure will affect very few users. However, I don’t quite understand the reason Therefore, those users who have decided to stay on these versions, probably because they have not been able to update to more current versions but do not have the need to buy new devices either, must give up that possibility. Of course, thinking badly, I do understand the reason perfectly, and I don’t like it at all.
