When we are going to configure the 5GHz frequency band to repeat the signal, Depending on whether the router supports 160MHz or not, we can configure the trunk link in one frequency band or another. Let’s imagine that we have a 5GHz router that has 4 antennas and only supports 80MHz, the logical thing to do is to use the third frequency band of the repeater to achieve synchronization speeds of 2.4Gbps. In the event that the router has 2 antennas and supports 160MHz channel width, the logical thing to do is to use the 5GHz band of low channels to synchronize at this same speed of 2.4Gbps. Finally, if the router has 2 antennas and 80MHz, it would not matter which frequency band to use, the maximum speed will be a theoretical 1.2Gbps. Thanks to the incorporation of simultaneous triple band, we will be able to achieve high wireless speeds facing the backbone and also facing wireless clients. This is perfect for getting great wireless performance.
An important aspect is that we can configure the SmartConnect, that is, having a single WiFi wireless network (SSID) and that the router is in charge of positioning us in one frequency band or another automatically. If we use AVM FRITZ! Box routers, we will be able to configure a Mesh WiFi network thanks to FRITZ!Meshin this way, we are going to enjoy Wi-Fi roaming between nodes so that wireless clients pass from the repeater to the router and vice versa in a completely transparent way, without interruption in the wireless connection, the standard used for this roaming is 802.11k/v as usual.
This new AVM FRITZ! Repeater 3000 AX repeater has support for WPA2-Personal and also WPA3-PersonalTherefore, we have at our disposal the latest security standard, although in WPA2/WPA3 configuration and not only in WPA3-Personal mode. Of course, this repeater has a “Connect / WPS” button that will allow us to synchronize the WiFi repeater with any router, but if it is an AVM FRITZ! Box router we will have a high-performance Mesh WiFi network at our disposal. By incorporating it into the Mesh network, the repeater will import all the settings from the main router, such as WiFi settings, passwords, the guest WiFi network, and even the equipment’s on/off schedule.
This AVM FRITZ! Repeater 3000 AX repeater not only works in WiFi repeater mode (WiFi bridge), but it can also work in WiFi access point mode (LAN bridge mode), so we can connect it via cable to the main router and generate a WiFi network very high speed.
Wired Features
This equipment incorporates two Gigabit Ethernet ports for the LAN, this is perfect for the backbone network to work at a speed of 1Gbps, or so that when you connect devices such as Smart TV or TV Box they work at maximum speed without any problem. We miss that it does not have a 2.5G Multigigabit port, but if you want to have a port with this speed you will have to buy the superior model that is the AVM FRITZ! Repeater 6000.
You must remember that these ports will serve us both for the LAN bridge mode and for connecting end devices.
Firmware and configuration modes
The firmware of this repeater is the same FRITZ!OS as always, with all the usual configuration and customization options. This equipment allows two configuration modes:
- WiFi bridge: It is the usual universal WiFi repeater mode, if it is a router that is not from AVM, it will act as a normal repeater. If the router is an AVM router, then you will have WiFi Mesh with WiFi roaming to go from the repeater to the router and vice versa without interruption in the wireless connection.
- LAN bridge: this mode is the usual access point, we will connect the repeater to the router or to a switch via cable, and it will generate a high-performance WiFi network. If the router is from AVM, we can activate the Mesh network so that we have WiFi roaming between the nodes with the 802.11k/v standards.
A very important aspect of the firmware is that we can configure a guest WiFi network, the WiFi scheduler, and we have a “System” section where we can see an event log in detail, configure email notifications and much more.
Without a doubt, the most notable feature of the firmware of this AVM FRITZ! Repeater 3000 AX is the FRITZ!Mesh compatibilityso we can have a complete mesh WiFi network with WiFi roaming and band-steering.
Unboxing and first impressions
This AVM WiFi repeater looks the same as the FRITZ!Repeater 6000 or the FRITZ!Repeater 3000 that we have thoroughly tested before, however, the most important thing is inside, and that is that we have the Wi-Fi 6 standardand in the first 5GHz band we have availability of 160MHz channel width, perfect for achieving a very good wireless speed with WiFi clients compatible with this channel width.
Another very important aspect is that we have 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports, normally we have only one port, but in this case we have an additional port to be able to connect another device via additional cable, or to interconnect the router and the repeater by cable, and that still we have a port available to place a switch or connect an end device.
If you want to know everything about this WiFi repeater and what comes in the box, then you can see all the features of this AVM FRITZ!Repeater 3000 AX WiFi repeater, and also the built-in accessories as well as the documentation.
Soon we will offer you a complete analysis of this new WiFi 6 repeater that is one step below the FRITZ! Repeater 6000 model and above the FRITZ! Repeater 1200 AX. You will also be able to see in detail the real performance both via WiFi in WiFi bridge mode and in LAN bridge.
