Slowly but surely, the car market is picking up. As revealed by the latest data from AAA Data, new car registrations increased by 9% in January 2023 compared to the same month of the previous year. Thus, 111,939 registrations were recorded during the first month of the year.

Diesel continues to decline, electric continues to conquer

While diesel vehicles continue to fall, with a 33% drop in sales, new electric cars continue to appeal. After displaying a record market share in December 2022 of 16% (compared to 14% for diesel, a historic first), “wattures” got off to a good start in 2023 with 13% market share in France (9.9% in January 2022), for 14,626 registrations.

It must be said that the sector has benefited from the recent changes made to the ecological bonus on January 1, 2023, which now amounts to €7,000 compared to €6,000 for electric models sold below the 47,000 euro mark. Hybrids remained on a good dynamic, with 30% market share (simple and rechargeable hybrids).

Interestingly, alternative engines such as Superethanol or LPG are attracting more and more motorists. Nothing surprising in this inflationary context where energy expenditure is soaring. Thus, they represented 6% of the market in January 2023, an increase of 53% compared to January 2022.

The Dacia Spring tops sales in January 2023

Regarding the best-selling electric cars, the top three are experiencing some changes. Indeed, the Peugeot e-208 has had its crown stolen. The small city car, number one in sales for the year 2022, gives way in January 2023 to its runner-up, the Dacia Spring, with 1,911 registered registrations (+28% compared to January 2022).

The silver medal is awarded to the Fiat 500e, with 1,598 copies sold. Finally, the last step of the podium is occupied by the Renault Megane E-Tech, with 1,506 models sold. With the 4th place, we therefore find the Peugeot e-208which despite this sharp decline in the rankings, shows 1,337 sales. We find in 5th position an unexpected model since it is the MG4the famous compact at a bargain price from the Chinese manufacturer.

Regarding Tesla, the world leader is always present with 424 Model Y sold in France in January 2023. But it’s a safe bet that the brand will make a breakthrough in February, especially after the dizzying price drop in mid-January, with savings of more than €15,000 depending on the model .
