Ferrari approaches Qualcomm to accelerate its digital transformation

Qualcomm and Ferrari announce the signing of a partnership to support the automaker’s digital transformation.

Qualcomm and Ferrari have just announced the signing of a strategic partnership. The famous car manufacturer will rely on the expertise of the chip giant to accelerate its digital transformation. An agreement which concerns the road vehicles of the Italian brand, but also the Formula 1 team of Scuderia Ferrari.

Under the partnership, Qualcomm will be Ferrari’s system solutions provider for its upcoming road cars. Regarding Scuderia Ferrari and Ferrari eSports, the chip giant evokes a status of “premium partner”. Qualcomm Technologies says it will work with Ferrari to design, develop and integrate the automaker’s digital cockpits. The objective is to help the prancing horse brand to “transforming its vehicles in the digital age”.

What is the Snapdragon Digital Chassis?

The manufacturer behind the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 plans to equip Ferrari vehicles with the Snapdragon digital chassis. This Snapdragon Digital Chassis is presented as “a set of technological solutions to build connected and intelligent vehicles that are safer, customizable, immersive and constantly evolving”. For Qualcomm, it must allow “Automakers to redefine 21st century vehicles and create new opportunities for the industry”. A project that notably involves access to open, scalable and complete automotive platforms encompassing semiconductors, systems, software and services.

Earlier in the year, Renault also turned to the Snapdragon Digital solution. The French brand had mentioned the need to adapt “Faced with the rapidly changing automotive landscape” by developing new architectures. These include, for example, connectivity including 5G, wifi, Bluetooth or V2X technology.

There are also cockpits and digital display systems. They aim to transform “Consumer interaction and experience in the vehicle”. Finally, Qualcomm’s solution covers all levels of driving assistance (from L1 to L2+) and includes a service platform for managing functions (OTA updates, connectivity, subscription services, etc.) .

What place for Qualcomm within Scuderia Ferrari?

Qualcomm also returns to the “premium partnership” signed with the branch dedicated to automobile competitions. His Snapdragon branding will be prominently featured on rider suits throughout the 2022 season. It will also be visible at “several key locations” on the single-seaters of the Italian team.

This step further confirms Qualcomm’s interest in the automotive industry. The semiconductor manufacturer is not at its first attempt and has already approached several manufacturers. At the start of the year, agreements with Renault, Volvo and Honda were announced. In each case, the ambition is to support digital transformation and make cars smarter. With Ferrari, Qualcomm is approaching a new prestigious brand.
