Galaxy S22: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 model is faster than the Exynos 2200 in these benchmarks

The Galaxy S22 was presented last week, and some YouTubers have already been able to get their hands on the smartphone in its two versions: with an Exynos 2200 chip and with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip from Qualcomm.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

On February 9, Samsung launched its new Galaxy S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra. Without being revolutionary, smartphones bring some improvements to the winning formula of previous years. However, these are still available in two versions across the world, one with Samsung’s new Exynos 2200 chip, and the other with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 from Qualcomm.

On previous years’ models, the Exynos chips had been much criticized because of their lower performance compared to Snapdragon SoCs. In Europe, we are unfortunately still entitled to Samsung chips, so a youtuber wanted to compare the two versions in benchmarks.

The Exynos 2200 struggles to overtake the Exynos 2100 of the Galaxy S21

On YouTube, Erdi Özüağ is the first to publish a comparison between a Galaxy S22 with an Exynos 2200 chip and a Galaxy S22 with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. According to the various benchmarks, the result is striking: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 explodes its rival from Samsung. Worse still, we notice very clearly that the Exynos 2200 is struggling to overtake its predecessor, the Exynos 2100, which is found on the Galaxy S21 of 2021.

On the 3DMark Wild Life benchmark, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 peaks at 9,548 points, while the Exynos 2200 has to settle for just 6,684 points. The difference is of the same order on 3DMark Wild Life Extreme, 2,492 points for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 against 1,841 points for the Exynos 2200.

The youtuber then compared the GPUs of the two smartphones. We expected a lot from the Exynos 2200, since it was developed in partnership with AMD. However, again, the Exynos 2200 disappoints. It only gets 176 FPS on GFXBench 1080p Manhattan Offscreen, compared to 230 FPS for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. On version 3.1 of the benchmark, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 peaks at 165 points, compared to 111 points for the Samsung chip.

These results therefore confirm the concerns we raised before the launch.. It seems that Samsung restricted its Exynos 2200 chip before the release of the Galaxy S22 due to overheating problems, and the Korean manufacturer had not released any performance figures compared to the Exynos 2100.
