Honor Magic V2, aspiring to be the reference

Honor confirms, with this Honor Magic V2, that its commitment to folding smartphones is very, very serious. We already saw it at the end of last year, when the Honor Magic Vs were presented, which we knew from the first moment that they would arrive in Europe, something that happened shortly after, in February of this year. And it is that, from the first moment, its technical specifications, together with a very competitive price within its market, formed a declaration of intent that pointed to the top of the table.

Well, when not yet a year has passed since the manufacturer’s debut in the folding market, today has once again left us with a very good taste in our mouths with the presentationfor the moment for the Chinese market although we hope that with plans to make the leap to the international arena, the Honor Magic V2, a phone that is located, based on its specifications and features, in the Olympus of this growing market segment.

As you will see, when reviewing its technical specifications, we are talking about a phone that it would shine with its own light even if it were not a folding, which is the feeling that we will have, according to the manufacturer, when we use it without unfolding, which for a while has been one of the main weaknesses of fold-type phones. Thus, and at least in the first instance, it seems that we are facing the most solvent proposal in terms of offering two devices in one.

The specifications speak for themselves, and make it clear to us what was indicated at the beginning, that is, that Honor has decided to jump into the pool in the area in which it covers the most, and in view of the specifications, it seems evident that there could not have been executed the jump with more precision and success. Something that is positive for the brand, of course, but that it also represents a new and valuable boost to this marketthat of folding smartphones, which continues to grow slowly but steadily.

An aspect that in the first instance can go unnoticed but that is very important is found in its thickness when it is folded, and that is that we are facing the first phone of this type that, when folded, it is less than one centimeter thick. This undoubtedly plays a key role when we want to use it like a conventional phone, that is, without unfolding it. This will undoubtedly make a big difference in the day-to-day use of the Honor Magic V2.

Since we are talking about a folding smartphone, it is best to start by talking about its two screens, and in doing so we verify that, although the folding one is logically the main protagonist, Honor has not forgotten the exterior at all, which again brings us to the folded user experience. Thus, we find a panel 6.3-inch LTPO OLED with a resolution of 1,060 x 2,376 dots in a 20:9 aspect ratio and with a not inconsiderable density of 402 dots per inch. It is capable of scaling up to 120 hertz with an impressive 3,840 hertz DC Dimming. Its peak brightness can reach 2,500 nits, it is compatible with HDR10 + and represents 100% of the DCI-P3 color space.

As for the folding screen, we repeat with a panel OLED LTPO, this one 7.92 inches with a resolution of 2,156 x 2,344 points in a 9.78:9 aspect ratio and with a density similar to that of the external screen, that is, 402 dots per inch. It also shares 120 hertz and 3,840 hertz DC Dimming, as well as HDR10+ compatibility. Its peak brightness is 1,600 nits and, for content playback, it has the IMAX Enhanced certification, which guarantees a great experience.

Once inside, we see that for the Honor Magic V2 its manufacturer has opted for the most recent version of the top of the range from Qualcomm, that is, a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, a chip that integrates an eight-core CPU (one Cortex-X3 at 3.2GHz, two Cortex-A715 at 2.8GHz, two Cortex-A710 at 2.8GHz and three Cortex-A510 at 2.0GHz) together with an Adreno 740 GPU, Snapdragon X70 5G modem and a Hexagon processor for AI. It is accompanied by nothing less than 16 gigabytes of RAM and, when it comes to storage, the standard versions are offered with 256 and 512 gigabyteswhile the Ultimate version jumps up to a terabyte. For a moment, it almost seems that we are talking about the specifications of a PC, but no, we are still talking about a smartphone.

When it comes to connectivity, the Honor Magic V2 offers Physical 5G dual-SIMwith two nanoSIM bays (unlike other smartphones, which are also dual, but combining a nanoSIM with a digital eSIM), to which we must add Wi-Fi 6e with support for Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and global positioning. On the physical plane it only has a USB 3.1 Gen1 Type C port for data, headphone connection and battery charging.

In this case, however, it would be more appropriate to speak of batteries, since the charge storage is distributed between two batteries, of asymmetrical size, that add up to a total of 5,000 milliamps, with 66-watt fast charge function. And at this point it is important to mention that, unlike other manufacturers in the high range, Honor does include the fast charger with the phoneas well as the necessary cable so that we can enjoy this high charging speed from the first moment and without having to make an additional purchase.

Another interesting aspect of the Honor Magic V2 batteries is that they are not lithium ion, as we are used to seeing, but silicon-carbona technology presented by Honor at the beginning of the year, at MWC 2023, and which aims to offer greater energy density (that is, that in the same size, it can store more energy than a lithium-ion battery), as well as a fairly low degradation rate, which promises to extend the useful life of this smartphone.

A first look at its exterior, more specifically at its main camera, confirms that Honor has not wanted to leave the photographic section in the background. So, we find tthree elements, all of them in high resolution. The main role corresponds to a wide angle of 50 megapixels with number f / 1.9, an ultra wide angle also of 50 megapixels with number f / 2.0 and a telephoto lens with a level of magnification 2.5x, 20 megapixels and number f / 2.4 . With these elements, it is capable of capturing images of 8,192 × 6,144 points and recording video with 4K resolution (3,840 × 2,160 points). For its part, the front cameras (it has one on each of the screens) share characteristics, with a 16-megapixel wide-angle with f/2.2 number.

Hinge detail.

The only thing wrong with this Honor Magic V2 is that, for now, its availability is limited to China., where it is already available. However, there are signs that invite us to think that, as happened with the Magic Vs, at some point they will make the leap and, hopefully, reach our country. In the meantime, to get our teeth into it (since exchange prices are very interesting, although as usually happens in these cases they will surely increase when reaching other countries, as a result of tariffs), these are the configurations presented today and their prices:

  • Honor Magic V2 16GB+256GB: 8,999 Chinese yuan, €1,127.65 to the current change.
  • Honor Magic V2 16GB+512GB: 9,999 Chinese yuan, €1,252.96 to the current change.
  • Honor Magic V2 Ultimate 16GB+1TB: 11,999 Chinese yuan, €1,503.58 to the current change.

As I said at the beginning, Honor has decided to go all out with this Magic V2, and if it finally reaches international markets, as we hope, It has all the wickerwork to become the new benchmark in the fold-type folding market..
