HPE and SAP, among the entities that have joined together to inject 500 million into Aleph Alpha

A group of technology companies and investors have joined together to inject $500 million into AI startup Aleph Alpha in its series B round, which has just closed. This company works on the development of large language models that can rival those developed by technology companies such as Google and OpenAI.

They are between them HPE and SAPbut also German groups Schwarz and bosch. This continues the trend of large companies from various industry sectors, and also from the world of technology, in investing in startups dedicated to generative AI.

In total, the group that has just confirmed this investment is made up of seven different entities, which have communicated that their investment includes various commitments «for joint business development» with Aleph Alpha. However, the group has not offered more details in this regard.

The rest of the entities participating in the investment are the German Innovation Hub, Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence; Christ & Company Consulting and Burda Principal Investments. There are several previous investors who have also participated in the financing round, but independently of this group.

Aleph Alpha was founded in 2021 in Heidelberg (Germany). Its creator and CEO is Jonas Andrulis, a former SAP and Apple engineer.. It works with large language model technology, in a development similar to that of ChatGPT, but seeks to ensure that these have applications in European companies, for which it focuses on data security and privacy. Since its birth until now, Aleph Alpha has held several rounds of financing, of which the last one so far, in 2021, provided it with 23 million euros.

It does not seem like a very high figure when compared to the astronomical amounts collected by its competitors on the other side of the pond at that time. But it seems that this strong investment that they have just closed levels the situation a bit, since having economic muscle is vital for these types of companies to be able to meet the expenses caused by the high computing power they need to work. On the other hand, the current valuation of the startup is unknown.

However, its competitors from other regions of the planet, such as Anthropic, OpenAI and Google, have also improved their generative AI offering to make it useful and safe for companies in Europe. However, Andrulis does not seem overly concerned about it, judging by what he has indicated in the statement in which he communicates the investment received.

In it, the creator of Aleph Alpha assures that «With this latest investment, we will continue to improve our capabilities and allow our partners to be at the forefront of this technological development. To drive customers, Aleph Alpha will continue to expand its offerings, while maintaining independence and flexibility for its customers in infrastructure, cloud compatibility, on-premises support and hybrid setups. Developments underway will expand interfaces and customization options tailored to business-critical requirements. For clients with significant liability, and in strategic environments where sovereignty is at risk, we will continue to be the best option«.
