I’m in Spain, but Netflix thinks I’m in another country, what do I do?

Netflix makes available to us, in exchange for a monthly fee, a large catalog of series and movies to watch whenever and wherever we want. In each country, the platform offers different catalogues, with different languages, so that each user has a personalized experience depending on where they are. However, there are times when, upon entering, we can find the catalog of another country. And even a message that tells us that, despite being in Spain, the platform is not available in our country. What I can do?

When we enter Netflix, in addition to the domain that we use in the URL, the servers analyze our IP address to see where we are trying to enter from. In general, if we connect from a computer, mobile or TV in Spain, the IP that we will use will be an IP registered in Spain, so we will be able to access the catalog of our country. However, there are times when this is not the case. And that can give us more than one headache.

Why does Netflix say I’m in another country?

Large Internet companies, such as Movistar, Vodafone or Orange, generally give us Spanish IPs, correctly registered in our country. In this way, whenever we browse the Internet, the websites will know that we are accessing from Spain.

However, when we contract Internet with Low Cost companies, for example, with Digi, things change. As part of your savings is the assign clients Romanian IPs before Spanish IPs. For this reason, when we visit many websites, it tells us by default that we are entering from another country, such as Romania, instead of from Spain. With the problems (and personalized advertising in Romanian) that this implies.

Netflix Romania

In some pages it is enough to change the region to be able to enter from our country. However, service websites, such as Netflix, will automatically detect that our country is Romania, and will show us the catalog of that country. But we will not be able to enter the Netflix of Spain.

What I can do?

The first thing we have to do is check if, indeed, our IP is registered in another country. To do this, we can simply enter the What Is My IP website and we will check where we belong. We can also go into Fast.com to actually see where the Netflix servers place us.

In the event that our IP belongs to another country, we will have to contact Netflix customer service to expose the problem and get a solution as soon as possible.

As a last resort, we can also connect to a VPN that has a server in Spain and go to the Internet through it to enter Netflix Spain. In this way, as long as the VPN is not on the company’s blacklist, we can access the entire Netflix Spain catalog in our country. Of course, if we want to see it without cuts and in 4K, the VPN must be fast and stable, or else we will have problems.
