Kubuntu Focus has announced the launch of an M2 Gen 5 laptop that has nothing to envy its Windows counterparts, since it mounts the most advanced processors and graphics from Intel and NVIDIA.
Unfortunately, 2023 will not be the year of Linux either… The free system is sweeping mobility or supercomputing and has a great presence in servers and IoT, but there is no way to achieve a market share that we can consider acceptable. We have discussed it on many occasions. Microsoft has a beastly control of the OEM channel and from there comes the enormous presence of Windows, since few users change the system that is delivered by default.
And without a larger market share Linux support is reduced in hardware and software development. Hence the importance of launches such as the one at hand, which we would like to see in greater numbers and not only from specialized integrators, but also from the great PC developers who should offer it as the necessary alternative to Windows.

Kubuntu Focus is one of the integrators that, like System76, is committed to Linux. Your latest offer is “fifth generation of the M2”not to be confused with Apple’s M2s, nor M2 SSDs attached to PCIe 5. But it’s a good ‘beast’, one of the most powerful Linux laptops till the date.
It is based on a panel screen 15.6-inch IPS diagonal, with native QHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels) and a refresh rate of 240 Hz, which is the highest in the industry for this resolution. The equipment of this Focus offers different internal hardware configuration options, up to a powerful Intel Core i9-13900HX with 24 cores. The graphic section is not far behind since it offers the latest generation of NVIDIA dedicated, up to the RTX 4070.
Positioned as a mobile workstation, the total capacity of RAM memory rises to 64 Gbytes and high speed DDR5 at 4800 MHz. For internal storage, Focus installs two M.2 connectors with a capacity for 4 Tbytes with dual PCIe 4.0 SSDs. It does not lack anything in connectivity, with two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt support, HDMI and Display Port outputs, two USB-A 3.2 ports and audio outputs.
The Internet connection can be made with a 2.5 Gbe Ethernet LAN, in addition to Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5 also supported. Its keyboard is a full-size, backlit chiclet with a numeric keypad, and it’s accompanied by a generously sized touchpad and a 2-megapixel webcam.
The Kubuntu Focus M2 Gen 5 pre-installs Kubuntu 22.04 LTS with optimized kernel, KDE Plasma environment and full disk encryption (optional). It is available from $1,895 and it is a great team for those who bet on a GNU/Linux ready to use.
