It’s no secret. Inflation is currently sailing at very high rates in France. Practically all the prices of everyday products are increasing, and not just basic necessities such as bread, oil, pasta or even milk. The energy sector is also affected, and you must have noticed the increase in your water, gas or electricity bills.

Thereby, an emergency law on purchasing power is currently being debated in the National Assembly. The objective of this law is in some ways to counter the inflation suffered by the French, and to restore a minimum the wallet of the citizens. In this context, MEPs presented two amendments to lower the cancellation fees for our mobile and internet plans.

Today, canceling a mobile plan or an internet plan with a commitment of more than one year is not possible. Unless you pay the remaining monthly installments of the first year, as well as 25% of the fees that remain on the second. The deputies who presented the amendments stress that this system represents a brake on purchasing power. They have therefore just presented two amendments to lighten the bill.

  • The first amendment proposes to remove the additional fee that is applied to the remaining second year.
  • The second concerns consumers who are registered in the over-indebtedness procedure. With concrete proof of their situation, they could be completely exempt from the costs of canceling a mobile or internet plan.

The two amendments proposed by the deputies will first have to pass before the Social Affairs Committee. They will then be debated next Monday in the hemicycle. The deputies of the National Assembly who voted to remove part of these termination fees for telephone or internet subscription contracts did so against the advice of elected LREM officials.
