News VOD 18/23: ‘Irati’, sword and witchcraft in the old Basque Country

VOD News brings you the best new releases of the week on Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix… And, as if it were a journey through valleys and mountains, Irati crowns a busier week than the previous one, in which interesting releases are recovered on almost all platforms, with some exceptions

Amazon Prime Video

For the third week in a row, Amazon Prime Video occupies the prominent position in the section and this time it is again due to the premiere of a film that is not an original of its own, but which has remained exclusive: Irati. But, be careful, because if it refers to recent movie releases, it is not the only one; in fact, Mad Heidi fell off the billboard even less time ago.

Irati

This time, the headline of the post sums up very well what you are going to find in Irati, a Basque film that premiered in theaters at the end of February and that Amazon has arranged for Prime Video. And well that he has done, because Irati It’s one of the most refreshing Spanish films of recent times, as well as a full-fledged rarity… And I’m not saying that just because it was shot in Basque.

Irati is the second feature film by Paul Urkijo Alijo, who already caught us with Errementari (The Blacksmith and the Devil) a debut with many points in common with the one at hand now, for better and for worse. Or, in other words, for the better and for the better, because there’s really nothing wrong with either. In essence, they are two fantastic stories very well set and quite original for what is customary in these parts.

If the bottom of Irati drinks from Basque mythology, the shape makes it from classics like Excalibur or the very Conan. Using a current reference, however shabby and even disrespectful it may sound a priori, we could label Irati as The Northman by Eroski, an epic story of great technical invoice whose most visible failures are, precisely, the visuals. But make no mistake, because it looks fabulous… and never better said.

The best of Irati, however, is that it shows that this cinema can be made in Spain. That and the hope that someone like Urkijo offers us to do even bigger things in the future. As well-known faces, that of its protagonist, Eneko Sagardoy, whom we saw in the tremendous Homeland; and that of a luxury high school such as Itziar Ituño, the tenacious police inspector of The Money Heist.

The film, by the way, is well dubbed into Spanish, although it is worth seeing it in Basque because it was recorded that way, because it sounds more natural and because it gives it the ideal ancestral touch for the visual tone in which the story of Irati, a fantastic story based on a series of graphic novels. Do not doubt it: everything that has a name exists.
