Only 2.6% market share for Android 12?

Every day we see more smartphones with Android 12, either new models, or devices that came to market with previous versions, and that have already been able to make the leap to the most current version of Google’s operating system. Thus, a significant growth in its adoption could be expected, in theory. However, and although this is obviously a number that continues to grow, it does not seem to be doing so at the rate that might be expected, although it is true that the numbers change substantially depending on the source consulted.

Thus, if we review the Global Stats data from StatCounter, we see that during the month of March the adoption of Android 12 was already at 9.5%. It is not much, after all we are talking about less than one in ten phones, but at least it is a “reasonable” figure, and yes, the quotes mean reasonable at the bottom of the table. According to said panel, the gold, silver and bronze medals are for Android 11, 10 and 9, with 35.62%, 23.8% and 11.76% respectively. Android 12, in fourth place, is still off the podium.

More striking, however, are the data obtained by Uptodown echoed by Gizchina. And it is that, according to the information originating in the analytics of the site itself, the adoption of Android 12 would be only 2.6%, with less than three out of every hundred terminals used to access said website equipped with the most current version of Google’s operating system for devices. A spectacularly low figure.

Thus, according to the classification of the site, we find Android 11, 10 and 9 occupying the first three positions, as in StatCounter, and with percentages of 29.5%, 25.2% and 11.5%, which are quite close in both cases. However, the surprise comes when in fourth position we find Android 8.1, which would currently retain 11% of the share (StatCounter gives it a 6.27%), and it is not until the fifth position, with the aforementioned 2.6%, when we find Android 12.

Only 2.6% market share for Android 12?

It seems, of course, that Uptodown’s data on Android 12 is quite low, but on the other hand, and if it is based on its analytics tools, this could also tell us that the StatCounter figure is optimisticand that in reality 10% is further away than we could imagine.

Now, whether it is 2.6% or 9.5%, personally it still seems to me to be a fairly low figure, since we must bear in mind that more than six months have passed since the launch of Android 12. This, in my opinion. , points deficiencies in the transmission chain responsible for bringing operating system updates to users. And this includes from those responsible for the customization layers to those who depend on which terminals can be updated and which will remain anchored to previous versions.

For comparison, and going back to StatCounter data, iOS 15.4 has a share of only 5.68%, but if we add all the versions of iOS from 15.1 to 15.4, both inclusive, we find a categorical 69.6%, nearly seven out of ten iPhones. Something very striking, if we take into account that both iOS 15 and Android 12 hit the market practically at the same time, in September of last year. This is, without a doubt, a point in which Apple has managed to get very ahead.
