PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim do not yet have a confirmed release date

The rumor mill about PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim has intensified in recent days with information that, based on statements by Hideaki Nishino, Sony’s senior vice president of platform experience, has given rise to a series of statements totally taken out of context and exaggerated with the sole intention of “attracting clicks”.

Surely you have read in recent days that PS5 Pro will arrive in 2023, or that this console will arrive before PS5 Slim, and that this information is based on an interview with Hideaki Nishino, but as I said, it is exaggerated and taken out of context. Famitsu, the source who interviewed the Sony executive, asked him literally: “The PS5 has entered its third year. PS4 Pro was released three years after (from PS4), but we would like Could you tell us about future projects?«.

To that question Nishino said, literally: “We believe that cumulative sales will exceed 37 million units by the end of fiscal year 2022, and this will be a very important period for our platform. We won’t talk about anything specific right now, but we look forward to talking later in the next year (2023)«.

PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim

Famitsu made a question focused on “future projects”, something totally generic that does not necessarily imply PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim, and Nishino gave the expected answer, that they have nothing to say and that we wait for 2023. Can it be deduced from this that we are going to see a PS5 Pro or a PS5 Slim in 2023? Well no, and to say otherwise is to force an interpretation that has no basis.

It is true that, during the last few months, we have been seeing a lot of rumors and also some speculation from relatively reliable sources that, in general, said that the launch of PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim was only a matter of time, and some even dared to give dates. Without going any further, Zuby_Tech said that PS5 Slim will be the first to arrive, and that it will land in September 2023, while PS5 Pro will go to November 2024.

It makes sense to think that the PS5 Slim will be the first to arrive, because this console will allow Sony to better amortize the design and hardware of the original console. Launching a PS5 Pro earlier would be counterproductive, as it could end up cannibalizing PS5 Slim sales. And speaking of PS5 Slim, remember that according to a trusted source, Sony would have already finished said console, and that it would have a modular design centered around a removable optical drivewhich would allow it to unify production and discontinue the current models, divided into a version without an optical drive and another with said drive.

That would be the model that could debut at the end of 2023, the console with a removable optical drive, although as I have already told you for now we have nothing confirmed, so we can only wait for Sony to decide to make an official announcement. For my part, I am clear, I would bet on a Slim model in 2023, and a Pro model later.
