PS5 surpasses 20 million units sold, Sony to ramp up production

The PlayStation 5 has now passed 20 million units sold worldwide and Sony has promised to significantly increase its production efforts in the next six months.

Sony has just revealed the latest PlayStation 5 sales figures to GamesIndustry.biz, and it looks like it’s still going strong around the world. In effect, the ninth generation console has, so far, sold over 20 million units worldwide. That’s still less than the previous generation, but according to Sony’s forecast, PlayStation 5 sales will exceed those of the PlayStation 4 in the second quarter of 2023.

It was expected that the PS5 would quickly exceed 20 million units sold, since Sony had already revealed a few weeks ago that the console had sold 19.3 million copies. While this can undeniably be considered a success, it should be noted that sales have been experiencing a real loss of speed for some time, in particular because of the shortage of components which does not seem to want to subside.

Sony will increase the production rate by the end of the year

Sony Interactive Entertainment Senior Vice President and Head of Global Sales and Business Operations Veronica Rogers has announced good news for anyone who is still unable to get their hands on a PS5. She states that the company is planning asignificant increase of its console production for the remainder of 2022, what should help players get the console if they don’t already have one.

Sales of the Xbox Series X and S have exceeded those of the PS5 in recent months, even though Microsoft’s console is historically less coveted, due to its wider availability. For example, we were able to see that the Xbox Series S had sold better than the PS5 in Japan, a first since the launch of the consoles.

Seeing Sony act to meet the ever-increasing demand is therefore a real ray of hope for many players. Indeed, these are mostly still using old Xbox One and PS4 consoles, but these will soon be discontinued by game developers.
