Robert Pattinson’s The Batman Is HBO’s Most Successful Max Latam Debut

It only took two days for The Batman’s arrival on HBO Max to set a record for the platform. According to streaming, the feature starring Robert Pattinson became the debut of the platform that has achieved the most success in Latin America so far – although he did not give more details about numbers and audience.

The Batman tells the story of Wayne when the masked vigilante is just starting his career in Gotham, taking his first steps as a batman. The film, directed by Matt Reeves, also has other big names in the cast such as Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), Paul Dano (Riddler), Colin Farrell (Penguin), Jeffrey Wright (Officer Jim Gordon) and Andy Serkis (Alfred). .

The Batman and the controversy of simultaneous premieres on HBO Max

Bruce Wayne’s latest story forms part of the platform’s “the theater to your home” offering, which encompasses a global deal with titles from Warner Bros. just off the big screen, so they can quickly reach multiple user screens.

Among other films that are part of the same agreement are titles such as Matrix Resurrections, Dune, King Richard: Creating Champions, The Suicide Squad, among others.

Denis Villeneuve, director of Dune, harshly criticized HBO Max when the film opened simultaneously with theaters – Image: reproduction/Warner Bros.

Despite being part of a global strategy by HBO Max, which previously involved the simultaneous release of the features in cinema and on streaming, The Batman was an exception. The Dark Knight movie, unlike The Matrix Resurrections, for example, arrived 46 days after the big screen debut that took place earlier in March.

It is worth mentioning that it is possible that there were some complaints about the previous strategy and it is possible that this resulted in the change in Warner’s plans. Previously, the company had even been sued by the Village Roadshow Films studio.

At the time, the studio participated in the co-production of Matrix Resurrections and filed the lawsuit alleging that WarnerMedia pushed the release of the title from 2022 to 2021 and that could cause problems – learn more about that here. Duna’s Denis Villeneuve was also reportedly critical of streaming at the time, stating that:

“I learned from the newspaper that Warner Bros. decided to release ‘Dune’ on HBO Max the same day as the theatrical release, using large footage from our film to promote their streaming service. With this decision, AT&T [conglomerado de mídia ao qual a Warner pertence] hijacked one of the most respectable and important studios in the history of cinema. There is no love for cinema, nor for the public, to that extent. It’s just focused on the survival of the telecommunications mammoth, one that is currently in astronomical debt of more than $150 billion,” Villeneuve told Variety.

Thus, the next premieres are scheduled to receive this “adjustment” of just over a month, according to a recent interview with WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar himself.

According to the executive, in the interview with the podcast recodethis same 46-day rule will apply to virtually all of the house’s next major releases, including Black Adam (scheduled for October 2022), The Flash (scheduled for 2023) and Elvis (director Baz Luhrmann, slated for a July release this year).
