Yesterday, Valve released an official video announcing that its Steam Deck handheld console was now available for purchase without a reservation, which is great news for many gamers who have been eagerly waiting for their copy to ship. However, this video did not fail to make people talk about it for another reason: it showed a Nintendo Switch emulator.

Indeed, in the video, we could see a Nintendo Switch screen with an icon for “Yuzu”, one of the most famous Nintendo Switch emulators, right next to other games like Hades, Tunic and Vampire Survivors. Valve quickly corrected the error, since the company hastened to delete the video before reposting it with the Portal 2 game replacing the emulator icon.

Valve promotes emulators on its Steam Deck

Valve doesn’t want to acknowledge it, but one of the main selling points of the Steam Deck is its ability to support emulators like Yuzu. While emulation has played a positive role in preserving games, Nintendo has aggressively targeted sites like RomUniverse, whose owner has been ordered to pay $21 million in a case tried in 2021.

Since its release, emulation or piracy has played a major role on the Steam Deck, and are an interesting selling point for many players. Whether for PSP, PS3, Saturn, PS1 or even Xbox games, the Steam Deck has proven to be an excellent choice for nostalgic gamers. However, by deleting the video, Valve pretends to ignore the emulation scene on the Steam Deck.

Anyway, for those unfamiliar with it, Yuzu allows people to play Switch games on other devices. While some people probably hack the Switch games they use the emulator for, it is also possible to legally buy a Switch game, transfer the ROM to a PC and then use Yuzu or another emulator to run it, often at higher resolutions and frame rates than is possible on Nintendo’s device.
