Thanks to the iPhone 13, Apple becomes number 1 in China ahead of Vivo and Oppo

A new study shows that the iPhone 13 is very successful. According to this report, Apple has taken the lead in the Chinese market. The American firm is ahead of all other local brands, including Vivo, Oppo, Honor and Xiaomi, positioned from second to fifth place. The study confirms the collapse of Huawei and Realme enters the seventh position.

Last week, we reported in our columns the rise of Apple to the top of the world ranking of smartphone brands. propelled to 22% market share, the Cupertino company has overtaken Samsung thanks to the iPhone 13 and its versions. The Korean giant is then relegated to second position with a 20% market share. Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo follow respectively with market shares ranging from 8% to 12%. This leadership is obviously only temporary: Samsung will logically resume its number 1 position in the first quarter of 2022.

A week later, another study confirms Apple’s very good figures for the fourth quarter of 2021. This comes from the Counterpoint Institute and focuses on the Chinese market. Usually, local brands have the upper hand, even during the holiday season. In the fourth quarter of 2020, Apple was then only in fourth position with a market share of 16%. This is not the case this year.

Apple temporarily becomes smartphone number in China

Indeed, Apple is the brand that sold the most smartphones in China between October and December 2021. It counts 23% of the market, an increase of 7 points. This is the best progression of the Top 7. Thanks to this, Apple overtakes Vivo and Oppo. Apple sold 32% more iPhones over this period compared to the same period in 2020. This is the third best performance over the year 2021, after Realme and Honor. There is no doubt that this growth is also due to the commercial success of the iPhone 13 and its versions.

Vivo and Oppo (with OnePlus) follow Apple. The two related brands have maintained their market share (19% and 18%, respectively) despite a slight drop in sales volumes (-6% each). They retain the same place as the previous year. Behind Oppo, Honor is fourth. The brand has come a long way, recording a 50% growth of its sales volumes and a 6-point increase in its market share. Honor now accounts for 15% of sales in China. She was sixth at the end of 2020. Her independence seems to be very beneficial to her.

It’s a tumble for Huawei and Samsung, as Realme progresses

Xiaomi, regularly in the Top 3 worldwide, is only fifth in its home market. However, the brand progressed slightly over the end-of-year holiday period: 1 point better in market share, to reach 13%, and 2% growth in sales volumes. Xiaomi was already fifth at the end of 2020.

In sixth position, we find Huawei. For the former Chinese leader, it’s a tumble. The brand was still in first position at the end of 2020. But it lost 73% of its sales volumes. Even in China, Huawei no longer sells smartphones. Its market share fell from 23% to 7%.

Finally, in seventh position we find Realme, another trademark of Oppo. It also greatly increased its sales volumes in China: 83% growth. Its market share increased from 1% to 3%. It is likely that the progress of Realme pushed Samsung out of the rankings. The Korean firm is no longer part of the Top 7. Like Lenovo, it is relegated to the “Other” section, which represents 4% of the Chinese market.
