Some see absurdity that nowadays mobile devices as advanced as iPhones have a piece of cardboard as an essential element for their full operation. However, this year it could begin to change, at least as far as Apple is concerned. According to the rumors that have been known these weeks, it seems increasingly clear that iPhone 14 will remove physical SIM cards. This would also mean pushing the telephone companies to take the final step towards its elimination.
What benefits will this measure bring?
Although there are still months to go before we officially see these iPhones and it is confirmed that they do not have a SIM card tray, first we can get a global idea of the advantages that all iPhones have eSIM instead of the physical format would entail.
The first, in relation to the card itself, since it would be said goodbye definitely to problems such as losses, breakages and other problems that they usually generate. This would imply, for example, a saving money when requesting a duplicate or activating a SIM for the first time. Although it must be said that some companies already charge the eSIM registration service almost at the price of the physical ones, so it would have to be standardized.
On the other hand, it must be said that the space now occupied by the iPhone slot for the SIM tray could be occupied by other elements. For example, we could have bigger battery by having more usable space. This is not so much of a problem on newer models anymore, but it would certainly be a step forward to stop it being so altogether.
It could also bring inconvenience
It is true in the same way that, at least at first, that the iPhone 14 only allow mobile connection with eSIM could be a significant handicap in some cases. First of all is that there are countries where eSIMs are not supported, since the operators do not include it in their services. In the same way as in those territories where there are, not all companies offer it.
On the other hand, the configuration of this type of digital cards is not the simplest thing in the world. Therefore, it is expected that Apple will make this matter much easier and when performing actions such as restoring an iPhone we will not encounter as many problems as those that arise now, since in most cases all the information on it is lost when formatting it.
Precedents of the iPhone with the telephone operators
Returning to the issue of the operators and the change that it would entail, we must remember that with the arrival of the first iPhone there was already a paradigm shift for them. Until then, in countries like Spain they had a tough monopoly, being the main sellers of mobile phones and taking advantage of it in various ways.
For example, it was common for companies not to offer free mobiles to be used with any other operator. In the same way that they included their logo on the chassis of the terminal, in addition to including on and / or off animations with their image. It was even normal to find your own apps within the operating system of the phones. But nevertheless, Apple banned strictly this type of actions.
Over time, it became standard for all brands to impose such prohibitions. It was also increasingly common to find that other stores, in addition to the brands themselves, sell mobile devices beyond the operators.
Therefore, having these precedents, it is expected that after Apple other important manufacturers will arrive in the sector to Press operators and thus end the obligation to have a physical SIM card. This would also impose the necessary regularization of eSIM fees and a simplification of processes so that everything can be easier and digitized.
