the original films seduce less and less

If Netflix regularly explodes the view counters on its exclusive series, it is difficult to say the same with its original films. Indeed, the platform’s feature films are less and less attractive, in the United States and in France.

If HBO can boast of having exceeded 32 million spectators with the series The Last of Us, Netflix can always count on its original series to mobilize the crowds. Especially since big productions are expected soon, starting with season 5 of Black Mirror and its 5-star cast, the 3rd season of The Witcher or even the final season of Stranger Things.

However, if these series are probably promised a great audience success, Netflix has decided to reduce the sails on its original productions in 2023. From 83 in 2022, the streaming platform plans to release only 48 original films on its service in 2023. A reasoned decision above all for economic reasons, at a time when Netflix seeks to restructure its film production division (with many layoffs as a result).

On the other hand, the latest ratings also prove that Netflix movies are finding it harder and harder to win over viewers. As noted by our colleagues on the site BGRwe find at the beginning of May 2023 only one Netflix production in the TOP 10 of the most watched films in the United States.

Only one Netflix film in the American TOP 10

Cocorico moreover since it is a question ofA.K.A., excellent French action film with Alban Lenoir and Eric Cantona. In the world rankings, the situation is not much better, with only 4 original Netflix productions in the TOP 10namely A Tourist’s Guide To Love, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, Murder Mystery 2 and Chupa.

In France, we do not yet have the data for the last two weeks, but between April 24 and 30, 2023, we still found a majority of non-Netflix films and series in the ranking of the most watched productions. AKA climbed to the top, followed by Amour en Touriste in 4th position, A la Gorge in 6th and Seven Kings Must Die in 8th.

What we notice above all is the lack of long-term commitment to Netflix films, which usually remain in the TOP 10 for a week or two, before falling into oblivion. The question now is to know what causes this disenchantment among users: probably a clever mix between insufficient promotion, still too many releases and a quality sawtooth, more often close to the nanar than the masterpiece.
