The shortage of PCs and computer chips could end by the end of 2022

The shortage of PCs and computer chips seems to be coming to an end. According to figures from Counterpoint, the drop in demand for computers will help reduce production difficulties by the end of 2022.

Laptop Winter Sale

The popularization of working from home, the high demand for PCs, health constraints against Covid-19 and the trade war between China and the United States have resulted in a significant lack of semiconductors. The situation was aggravated by the war in Ukraine. The computer chip industry depends on a rare gas producer located in the south of the country.

Despite this backdrop, a new report from Counterpoint Research estimates that the supply challenges faced by the computer chip and computer industry are expected to calm down in the months to come. “Since the end of 2021, the gaps between demand and supply have been closing, signaling an imminent end to supply contraction across the ecosystem”explains Counterpoint Research in its report.

The PC shortage is coming to an end thanks to a drop in demand

Combining information from various industry sources, Counterpoint believes that decline in PC demand will help fill gaps in supply chains. After an explosion in demand during confinement, computers are selling less and less well. The pandemic, with the rise of teleworking and homeschooling, has indeed given a big boost to laptop sales. During the first quarter of 2021, the PC market recorded an increase of 53.1% compared to the first quarter of 2020.

According to figures collected by the analysis firm, PC sales are down in the first quarter of 2022. “Global PC shipments fell 4.3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2022 to 78.7 million units”states the report, stating that “2021 backlog continued to contribute substantially to early 2022 PC shipments”. Besides, it was inevitable that computer sales would eventually contract.

PC sales are also affected by the confinements decreed by the Chinese government, in particular in the cities of Shanghai and Kunshan, “where many laptop manufacturing lines are located”. Under these conditions, it is likely that the PC market will contract during April.
