These radar panels will disappear from the roads in France

The multiplication of radar panels in France is soon over. The historic panels will soon leave the French roads, and will be replaced by new models which were already present on some roads.

Old radar panels

Since 2003, France has been using signs on its roads to indicate the presence of speed cameras. The old signs, which you can see above, read “ For your safety, automatic controls “. Placed about 600 meters from the radar on the highways, these could sometimes be closer depending on the maximum speed allowed. The distance was for example only 400 meters on roads limited to 90 km/h.

In 2010, these signs evolved slightly to include a truck and the words ” For your safety, frequent radar checks “. This time they were placed up to 3 kilometers upstream of the radars, and could signal several consecutive fixed radars. These are the two signs that will soon disappear from the roads in France.

What do the new speed camera signs look like?

Since 2017, Road Safety has been deploying two new panel models in France. On these, we notice the absence of the truck, but also additional indications. One of the two also includes an indication of the speed limit in force on this stretch of road, while the other indicates controls over several kilometers using a small panel, these new “decoy control” areas. In 2023, a new ultra-efficient radar will also be installed in France.

New radar panels

Road Safety now intends to speed up the removal of the two old speed camera signs in favor of the two new versions. This will likely limit confusion for motorists, which should so far accept the cohabitation of four different panelss.

The arrival of the new signs is also good news in terms of inclusiveness, since they do not include any mention in French. Thereby, they will be easier to understand for motorists of another nationality passing through our roads. It is not known exactly when the last old signs will be removed, but it is likely that they will all be modified by the end of 2022. And you, what do you think of the design of the new speed camera signs? ? Do not hesitate to tell us in the comments.
