these two novelties will change everything

Security is one of the pillars of Windows 11. Microsoft is constantly working to keep its system safe and its users do not fall into the clutches of hackers. To do this, in addition to correcting security flaws, it includes new functions and features in the system to help keep data protected. And, today, we can know the two new security features that land in the operating system.

Microsoft has announced today a new Insider version for Windows 11 users, specifically a new version within the Canary branch, the most experimental. In this branch of development, Microsoft usually makes large changes to the system to test its impact, taking some of them to the final versions of the system and discarding a large number of changes that have not given the expected effect.

Today, in the new system update, we can learn about two of the main security innovations that, very soon, all users of this OS will be able to enjoy.

Enhanced scam protection

The first of the novelties, and the most interesting for all users, is within the Enhanced Phishing Protection. This new feature is part of Windows Defender, and was introduced in September 2022 along with the 22H2 system update. Until now, the operation of this security measure is very simple, since it only warned users not to use strong passwords, not to reuse them and not to copy them to a notepad.

Phishing protection in Windows Defender

This security measure is enabled by default for all Windows 11 22H2 users. Of course, not all security shields are enabled by default, since password control, if we want to use it, we have to activate it by hand from the Windows Defender settings.

Starting today, Windows 11 Insiders will have a new security feature in this hacker protection module. And it is that the Windows antivirus will warn when we try to paste the password in a malicious web. Of course, this security function will be deactivated by default, so we will have to activate it ourselves.

more secure connections

The second of the security innovations that comes to Windows 11 is SHA-3. This is the latest version of the cryptographic algorithm, much more modern and secure than current SHA-2 versions. Starting today, the Canary branch of Windows will be able to make use of the SHAKE, cSHAKE, KMAC functions, as well as all other hashing, hmac, and derivative algorithms. The compatibility is as follows:

  • SHA-3 Hash Functions: SHA3-256, SHA3-384, SHA3-512 (SHA3-224 is not supported)
  • SHA-3 HMAC algorithms: HMAC-SHA3-256, HMAC-SHA3-384, HMAC-SHA3-512
  • SHA-3 derived algorithms: XOF, SHAKE128, SHAKE256, XOFs cSHAKE128, cSHAKE256 and KMAC (KMAC128, KMAC256, KMACXOF128, KMACXOF256).

When do these new security measures arrive?

At the moment, as we have explained, only Insider users, specifically those who belong to the Canary branch (the most advanced and unstable) will be able to start enjoying them. The rest of the users, those of us who use the normal versions of Windows 11, will still have to wait a bit before we can receive these news.

We still don’t know if Microsoft has them ready for Moment 3, the third update less than 22H2, or if these news will already be part of Windows 11 22H3. For now we can only wait.
