For most people, the RTX 40 is nothing more than a metaphysical entity that is talked about on hardware websites like the one you are reading. That is to say, it is an impalpable and unattainable object due to the high cost for the buyer that these graphics cards result. And the latest rumors, if they turn out to be true, do not give much hope.
We have to start from the fact that the RTX 4070 is a card that will derive from the current RTX 4070 Ti, which means that it will use the same chip, but in a different variant. As for the memory configuration, it is also expected to be GDDR6X on a 192-bit bus, but a bit slower. Of course, with fewer active cores on the chip and probably with a slightly slower memory, which will lower its consumption.
Is this the price of the NVIDIA RTX 4070?
What do we know at the moment? The number of active cores is 46 SM with 5888 of the so-called CUDA cores, while the 4070 Ti has 60 SM and 7680 units of the same type. Both obviously sharing the same architecture. As for final clock speeds, these are the following:
- 1910 MHz base speed of the RTX 4070 vs. 2310 MHz on the RTX 4070 Ti.
- 2475 MHz Boost Speed on the RTX 4070 vs. 2610 MHz on the RTX 4070 Ti.
- This are 29 TFLOPS of computing power compared to the 40 TFLOPS of its older sister.
- 200W PTO versus 285W.
Now, in the last few hours, the network gossips have appeared to say that NVIDIA will sell its version, the RTX 4070, for US$749. This represents a cost 50% higher than that of the RTX 3070 and only 50 monetary units cheaper than the RTX 4070 Ti, which makes us raise our eyebrows with complete skepticism, since it would be shooting itself in the foot by NVIDIA.
Why are we skeptical about the price?
The reason for this is that by following a rule of thumb as far as the gross power of the card is concerned, in each and every one of its elements, we find that the RTX 4070 has 72.5% of the power of the 4070 Ti. So in relation to power / price we should expect a graphics card close to 600 dollars, a price that would still be higher than its predecessor, but that would make sense with its performance.
Recently, AMD released the RX 7900 XT with lower performance for what you pay for it. The consequences? The stock of these cards collecting dust in stores and AMD reluctantly having to lower the price of them just a few days ago to be able to get rid of them.
