What is needed to play PlayStation titles on PC?

SONY’s decision to port its playstation games to pc we were all surprised when it was first announced. Today we can already play classics like Uncharted 4, God of War, days gone, Horizon Zero Dawn either spider-man. All of them have been critical success on consoles. However, the following question comes to mind for computer game users: What PC do I need to be able to play these classics and not buy a PS5?

The PC is undoubtedly the most profitable platform for those who make console games, after all, consoles use the same technology and today making conversions is very easy and costs a few million dollars. This means spending less than 10% of the original budget, which was already recovered with the game in its original version. Obviously, if you have a PlayStation 4 or 5 you will have already played some of those games before they came out on PC from your console. However, not everyone has one of SONY’s video game systems.

The ideal PC to play PlayStation games

In this case we are not going to talk about the computer that the different emulators of the console require, but what we are looking for is to be able to play the different games that the people at PlayStation Studios have made for PC. That is why we have arranged the recommended requirements of each of them in a table in order to be able to choose the optimal configuration for all of them and not fall short in any way.

Requirement Horizon days gone God of War spider-man
CPUs 4 cores 3.5GHz 4 cores 3.5GHz 4 cores 3.5GHz 4 cores 3.5GHz
RAM 16GB RAM 16GB RAM 16GB RAM 16GB RAM
Graphic card GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB) GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB) GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB) GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB)
Storage 100GB 70GB (SSD) 70GB (SSD) 75GB

As you can see in the table, the recommended requirements are the same for all games according to the people at SONY, however, we are going to try to go a little further. Especially since they all have support for Ray Tracing and DLSS through NVIDIA. Which has made us completely rule out AMD solutions. Which is paradoxical since the technology used in the last two generations is precisely from the brand with three acronyms. Moreover, we are not going to settle for a GTX and it is best to go for an RTX. Our choice? A GIGABYTE RTX 3060 Ti, which at the time of writing this news is temporarily at a price below €500.

We have to start from the basis that the two most technically demanding games are God of War and Spider-Man, mainly due to the fact that they are the most recent to hit the market for computers. In the case of the arachnid hero game, the card at maximum detail and at 4K resolution, the NVIDIA card reaches 60 FPS on average without having DLSS activated, which is very good. On the other hand, if we talk about Kratos’ epic, it stays at 50 FPS, but with NVIDIA’s resolution increase algorithm, it’s something else.

And what about the rest of the system?

The games are direct conversions of PlayStation 4, a console that has an 8-core AMD Jaguar processor, an architecture that was created for netbooks and other low-performance computers. So any CPU from Intel or AMD with at least 8 threads, usually 4 cores, will be able to move games without problems, since they lack optimizations or extras that allow them to take advantage of the greater power of current chips. So our choice is a Intel Core i5-11400F accompanied by a base plate ASUS PRIME B560-PLUS.

In terms of RAM and storage we have been quite conservative, on the one hand, 2 Corsair Vengeance 8GB Modules. On the other hand a 1TB capacity Samsung 980 M.2 SSD. However, we cannot forget about the power supply, which is why we have chosen a CORSAIR RM650x. As for the box, we leave it to your choice, although keep in mind that the motherboard and the power supply are of the ATX type and, therefore, you will have to choose one that meets both requirements.
